Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of these colour coats is the Gordon setter usually found wearing?

Answer: Black and Tan

Black and tan is the only colour permissible by the Kennel Club and is distinctive amongst setters. Only a very small patch of white on the chest is allowed.
2. Gordon setters are often uncoordinated until well after their puppy days.

Answer: True

Gordon setter puppies are slow to mature and are, indeed, clumsy. Once mature the Gordon setter's elegant, galloping movement is certainly a sight to behold in the show ring.
3. Which breed was used in the development of the Gordon setter?

Answer: Bloodhound

The bloodhound was among various breeds used in the development of the Gordon. Collies were also used as were the other UK setter breeds.
4. Whereabouts in Scotland was the breed's standard started?

Answer: Banffshire

Banffshire was the ancestral seat of the fourth Duke of Richmond and Gordon, the man responsible for refining and standardising the breed.
5. The Gordon setter would make an excellent guard dog.

Answer: False

Gordon setters do NOT make good guard dogs, they are more likely to lick a burglar to death then guard your home. Well, job done really!

Seriously though, a Gordon does not fare well for outside living and they really do love people too much to guard anything.
6. What function was the Gordon setter originally bred for?

Answer: Both of these

The Gordon was used for both of these originally, but was never as widespread as the other UK setter breeds despite being generally calmer with fewer genetic faults.
7. The Gordon setter is only used as a companion now.

Answer: False

The Gordon setter is still very much a working dog. Due to it being less well known than the other UK setter breeds, it has not enjoyed the same popularity as a companion dog.
8. Which of these coat types best describe a Gordon setter according to the UK Kennel club standard?

Answer: Long and straight

Some Gordons do have wavy coats, but it is certainly a disqualifier for the show ring under the Kennel Club standard.
9. The Gordon setter is not well suited to town life.

Answer: True

Like all gundogs the Gordon requires extensive exercise which means it is more ideally suited to country living. Behaviour problems due to reservoirs of energy ensue if the amount of exercise is not enough.
10. On average, how long can you expect your Gordon setter to live for?

Answer: 9 to 15 years

According to the Kennel Club you can expect your Gordon to live for 9 to 15 years, although it is unlikely to be the upper end of that range. This is the burden of all lovers of bigger breeds, their comparatively short lifespan. :-(
