Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The original process of breeding a Golden Retriever began in 1864 and ended with the dog that we know today in 1884, using several combinations of unique breeds. We thank Lord _________ for this marvelous creature.

Answer: Tweedmouth

Lord Tweedmouth was in need of a dog that could retrieve on land and in water, and had the ability to endure long, strenuous days. There was such a dog in the St. John's Water Dog but Tweedmouth always had a taste for yellow and red coloured dogs. So, he set off on a quest to create such a dog.

He started breeding a yellow Tweed Water Spaniel and a Wavy Coat Retriever and the rest is history.
2. Many breeds are likely to be found in the ancient Golden Retriever bloodlines. Which of the following breeds are not likely to have been used in the original Golden Retriever breeding?

Answer: Labrador Retriever

The spirits and instincts of the Wavy Coated Retriever, Tweed Water Spaniel, Newfoundland, Irish Setter, Bloodhound, and St. John's Water Dog are usually found in today's Golden Retriever temperaments. The Labrador Retriever is not suspected to be used in Tweedmouth's breeding, although it does possess many of the same characteristics.
3. Golden Retrievers come in various shades of gold, ranging from dark red to almost white. Is it true that Goldens with coats of either extreme could be disqualified from American Kennel Club or Canadian Kennel Club dog shows for being outside of the breed standard?

Answer: No

Though the breed standard does say the retriever coat consists of any shade of cream or gold, it also states that any coat that is extremely dark or extremely pale is undesirable. However, a judge cannot disqualify a Golden Retriever based on colour.
4. A puppy's coat is almost always lighter than what it will eventually be as an adult dog. Which part of the Golden puppy's coat resembles the resultant colour of the adult coat?

Answer: Ears

Theoretically, the colour of a Golden puppy's ears will be the eventual colour of the adult Golden. Breeders use this method when determining what the puppy will look like as an adult, if the prospective buyer desires a certain colour.
5. Each country has a unique kennel club. For example, America is home to the American Kennel Club (AKC) while Canada is home to the Canadian Kennel Club (CKC). Does the Golden Retriever breed standard differ between the kennel clubs?

Answer: Yes

Each kennel club writes and abides by a different breed standard. Breeders belonging to these clubs should abide by the breed standard put forth by the club with which they register their dogs.
6. It is said that Goldens bred for different purposes will vary in personality and in stature. A Golden bred for hunting and field trial competition is generally __________ in stature and often darker in colour.

Answer: smaller

Field and hunting Goldens tend to be more active dogs. For prospective puppy owners, the parent Golden's background should be evaluated to determine the personality of the resulting puppies. Goldens with field and/or agility backgrounds will be more hyper and active while conformation Goldens will be more laid back and relaxed.
7. The Golden has quite a reputation to maintain in the general public. He/she is viewed as a beautiful and intelligent dog. Which of the following is NOT typical of a Golden Retriever's personality?

Answer: Non-active

Goldens are the people's dog! They love and need to be near people. They also require a lot of exercise. After all, they are a sporting dog and it in their instinct to retrieve. The Golden is anything but a non-active dog.
8. A Golden Retriever will always go through a "fear period" as a puppy.

Answer: False

Although many breeders and dog owners see the 8 week period as a time of fear, some have said they have never seen any unusual or fearful behavior in Goldens. It is best to take extra caution during this time with a new Golden puppy.
9. A typical Golden breeder will sell a Golden Retriever with limited registration. This means that any puppies that the buyer's dog produces will be eligible for registration with the American Kennel Club.

Answer: False

Limited Registration means that the buyer's puppy will be registered but any puppies of the buyer's puppy cannot and will not be eligible for purebred registration. This cuts back on illegitimate and irresponsible breeding of Golden Retrievers.
10. Which statement below best describes the typical Golden's compatibility with a family?

Answer: Wishes to be around and follow the family

A Golden is usually termed as a "shadow dog" or "Velcro dog" because he/she wants and needs to be near people all the time. They enjoy the company of family and would have it no other way.
