How Much Do You Really Know About Dog Mushing? Quiz

I've been mushing since I was seven, and was disappointed to see very few mushing quizes on FunTrivia. I decided to make one so that more people can learn about this wonderful sport.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the main difference between a bolted sled and a tied sled?

Answer: A tied sled is more flexible than a bolted sled

Really, both sleds are good, but the flexible sled is usually more expensive and lasts longer when it is in accidents.
2. Which one of these harness types are considered the most popular?

Answer: X back harnesses

The X back is one of the most popular harness types for recreational and racing mushers. It is a light harness that is usually made out of nylon webbing. It comes in a variety of sizes, from puppy to adult, and every color imaginable.
3. What is the most common breed of dog used in mushing today?

Answer: Alaskan husky

All of these breeds are in use, but the breed that the most people use is the Alaskan husky. Technically it is a type of dog bred for working rather than a pure breed. It is never purebred.
The Alaskan malamute is a strong freight dog that was popular during the gold rush. They are considered too slow for racing, and have changed so much over the years that some (not all) show Malamutes are not suited to life in a harness.
The Canadian Inuit dog hasn't changed over the years, unlike Siberians and Malamutes. They are extremely rare now, but are extremely good dogs for expeditions and long days of hard work.
The Siberian husky was a popular racing dog in the early 1900's when they were imported from Siberia. They now have nowhere near the speed of the Alaskan Husky. Some people still do race with Siberians in all-Siberian races and even in some all-breed races.
4. In mushing, what is the most common command used to make the dogs start running?

Answer: "Hike!"

Interestingly enough, I have never heard any musher (except in movies) say "mush." I heard that it is too soft a sound for a dog command from a few other mushers, but that might just be a rumor.
5. Which type of sled is rigid, but designed to float in soft snow with weight in it?

Answer: Toboggan

A basket sled is a common sled used by beginners and racers. A kicksled is a small sled pulled by one or two dogs. A sprint sled is a small, ultra-light sled with a lot of flexibility designed for sprint racing. A toboggan is designed to carry large loads in soft snow and float on top. On hard-packed trails, toboggans will slide around, and are not very useful.
6. What is pedaling or pumping?

Answer: Pushing the sled with your leg to help the dogs

When peddling, you usually push the sled with one leg in a smooth, even stroke to try and help the dogs out with a load. I like to do this in hilly areas and even on flat areas when I'm trying to get somewhere in a rush by dog team.
7. How should the dog's footpads feel?

Answer: They should be tough, but pliable

Feet make the dog. A dog without good feet will never make a good sled dog.
8. What is the "toughest sled dog race in the world?"

Answer: Yukon Quest

In the Yukon Quest, there are fewer checkpoints that are farther apart with a tougher trail than the Iditarod.
9. Junior mushers are mushers under the age of 18 years. What is one distance race that they can compete in?

Answer: Junior Yukon Quest

There are only two distance races for junior mushers in Alaska; the Junior Iditarod and the Junior Yukon Quest.
10. We may have heard about Jeff King and Susan Butcher and the other professional mushers. John Suter was a bit different- what breed did he use for his team in the Iditarod?

Answer: Standard poodles

John Suter was amazed when his miniature poodle was able to keep up with his snowmachine. He started racing with standard poodles in 1976, and entered the Iditarod for the first time in 1988.
