Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which is not a gait shown in western pleasure riding?

Answer: Skip

In a western pleasure class the rider will be asked to show at the walk, jog and lope. In a flat class for hunters and jumpers, the jog is referred as the trot, and the lope is referred to as the canter. The lope and jog are often more collected and slower. In a western pleasure class, you will never be asked to canter. Instead you will be asked to lope. Loping is a gait of a western pleasure horse, a canter is not.
2. What is a gymkhana?

Answer: An event with timed classes based on speed and accuracy

Gymkhanas are sometimes referred to as games. Quarter horses are typically used in these events but other breeds of horses can be used also.
3. What is a green horse?

Answer: A horse that has little or no training

Green horses have very little or no training. There are often green horse classes in horse shows. To show in the division, a horse has to be under five years old and in its first year of showing.
4. What is used to get debris and rocks out of the hoof?

Answer: Hoof pick/iron

A hoof pick/iron removes debris and rocks so your horse does not become lame. You can purchase a hoof pick in a tack store. Hoof picks should be used as often as possible and definitely before you ride.
5. When leading a horse with a halter on you should always have what attached?

Answer: Lead rope

Always lead a horse with a lead rope and halter, or bridle with reins. If your horse spooks and you do not have a lead, you are either going to get hurt or your horse is going to get away.
6. What should be worn in a horse's tail if a horse kicks or is in heat?

Answer: red ribbon

Always be safe and make sure no one gets hurt. A red ribbon signifies if your horse kicks or is in heat. Mares are often attracted towards geldings and stallions, and typically kick at other mares when they are in heat. A gelding is a castrated male horse, and a stallion is a male that has not been castrated.
7. If you see a broken fence which means a horse could possibly get loose, what should you do?

Answer: Tell the barn manager/owner

You always want to tell the barn owner/manager. If a horse could get out, either lead the horse out or wait for help. Then tell the barn owner or manager.
8. What type of saddle do hunter jumpers typically use?

Answer: Close contact saddle

Hunter jumpers typically use close contact saddles. A barrel racing saddle is used for barrel racing. Dressage saddles are used for dressage. Close contact saddles support the horse's back when they are jumping.
9. Where is the frog located on a horse?

Answer: The hoof

The frog is a sensitive V shaped area in the hoof. When you are picking out a horse's hoofs, you have to be careful not to hurt the horse by picking at the frog.
10. About how much water does the average horse drink in a day?

Answer: 6-12 gallons

Horses drink a lot of water. How much water they drink really depends on the horse. The average horse drinks about 6-12 gallons. A bigger horse will probably drink more water than a smaller horse.
