Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. First word in the first ladder is a verb meaning "to degrade or debase".

Answer: demean

"Demean", along with the two words I gave you in my definition, uses the prefix "de-". This prefix comes from Latin and is used to give words the opposite meaning. For example:
"contaminate", meaning "to pollute, to introduce impurities" becomes "decontaminate", meaning "to remove contamination from something and make it safe".
2. Drop a letter and scramble to give me a verb meaning "to change something to make it better".

Answer: amend

As well as the more general definition I gave you, "amend" can also be used specifically to mean "formally adding to, taking from or rephrasing legislation".
3. Drop another letter and scramble to give me another way of saying "to christen".

Answer: name

The Japanese word for "name" is, in English letters, "namae". It's a lot easier to remember a foreign word if it resembles a word you know, don't you think?
4. Drop a letter and scramble to give me what we'd call someone if they were no longer a boy, but a grown ___?

Answer: man

As well as referring to an adult male, the word "man" is also used to refer to humankind as a whole. However, this is falling out of use as "nonsexist language" becomes more common.
5. Last word on this ladder! Drop a letter and scramble to answer this: If you "are" and he "is", then I ___?

Answer: am

These are all forms of the verb "to be". This verb is highly irregular in English due to the number of conjugations it uses. While most verbs will use five at most, it uses a staggering EIGHT! (be, being, been, am, are, is, was, were) Phew!

In French this verb, known there as "être", is also fairly unusual, as unlike most French verbs the six standard present tense conjugations (je suis, tu es, il/elle/on est, nous sommes, vous êtes, ils/elles sont) look almost nothing like each other.
6. New word! Start with a seven letter word meaning "to organise or set up".

Answer: Arrange

"Arrange" very closely resembles its French counterpart, "arranger". Actually, there are many words that are very similar in French and English. For example:
"install" is "installer"; "choose" is "choisir".

Some words are almost exactly the same!
7. Drop a letter and scramble to give me the word for a person whose job it is to patrol and protect a forest or park.

Answer: ranger

If you ever watched Yogi Bear, then you might know this word as the title of the stern Ranger Smith.

This is one word whose meaning in French differs from the English meaning. If I was speaking French, it would be a verb meaning "to clean up or tidy".
8. Drop a letter and scramble to give me a word meaning "fury or rage".

Answer: anger

One Japanese word for "anger" is, in English letters, "ikari". Interestingly, one word for "anchor" is written differently but is also pronounced "ikari". These words are homophones, meaning they are pronounced the same way but have different meanings and spellings. Japanese has a lot of homophones, due to having a relatively small number of sounds.
9. Drop a letter and scramble to give me an affectionate name you might use to address your grandmother.

Answer: gran

In French, "grandmother" is "grand-mère", but you might call your grandmother "mémé".
In Japanese, "grandmother" is, in English letters, "sobo", but you would call someone else's grandmother "obaasan" or you might call your own grandmother "baachan".
10. Drop a letter and scramble to give me a noun meaning "an old, useless horse".

Answer: nag

As well as the meaning given, "nag" can also mean "someone who nags" or "to scold or pester someone"
