The Ups and Downs of Social Distancing Quiz

Start with an eight-letter word (a circumstance). The next word will be one letter less and may need to be unscrambled. After you get down to one letter, I'll begin to add letters to make a new word. Have fun!

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The first word of 8 letters is what you are when you are set apart from everyone else (as we should all be while social distancing?)

Answer: Isolated

In its purest form, to be isolated is to be separated from everyone else, or everything else. Thankfully, in our present age of communication technology, people can still interact with others, even when in physical isolation.

It's just a lot harder for the extroverts out there.
2. Drop a letter and rearrange the rest to make a word that describes information given with attention to particulars (on all the latest news?)

Answer: Details

Knowing all the nitty-gritty details about something can be scary and overwhelming at times, but in many instances that is preferable to having no information and letting your mind (or the internet) run wild with speculation.

The question is, what are the sources of those details?
3. Drop another letter and rearrange the rest to describe having navigated on water (away from all of this?)

Answer: Sailed

Sailing away from the world and its problems are not a viable option for most. Unfortunately, we must face the world as it is given to us, with all the good and the bad.

It's too late to go back to how it was before; that ship has 'sailed'.
4. Lose another letter and rearrange the rest to make a word that is a walkway between the grocery shelves (one-way arrows?)

Answer: Aisle

How do you keep everyone safe when everyone still has to go to the same places for necessary items? One-way aisles in grocery stores are just one example of businesses trying to make it work.

'Aisle' give them that (sorry, that was worse than the last one.)
5. Again, drop a letter to make a small piece of land surrounded by water (maybe you got there after Q3?)

Answer: Isle

Back to the idea of isolation with this word. Hopefully you can share your figurative small island (isle) with family.

Let's not go the way of Gilligan, and find ourselves stranded.
6. Drop yet another letter and rearrange the rest to make a word that is totally untrue (like a lot of the 'news' on the internet?)

Answer: Lie

I'm not going to get political here. It behooves us all to do our due diligence in weeding out the falsehoods from the truths. Consider the source before you pass on information to others as fact.
7. Lose a letter once again to make a word that is an abbreviation for an elevated railroad (maybe avoid confined spaces?)

Answer: El

This brings to mind all of the industries impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic, from rapid transit and the airline industry to recreation facilities and small businesses.
8. Drop one last letter to leave yourself with a letter used as a vehicle country identifier for Spain (hit hard by the virus).

Answer: E

Although perhaps Spain was not the hardest hit by the Coronavirus, it was amongst the earliest, and unfortunately served as a warning to other nations.
9. Now add a letter to make a word that is a dialectical past tense of a word meaning to consume food (stay fed, stay healthy?)

Answer: Et

Of course, just keeping fed does nothing to prevent contracting a virus, but as with any illness, the healthier you can be before it hits, the better the chance to weather the proverbial storm.
10. Add another letter for the item on which you place your golf ball at the beginning of a given hole (keep six feet apart?)

Answer: Tee

What can still be done during a pandemic? Perhaps golf is one of those sports where we can stay physically distant from one another? It comes down to personal responsibility, in the end.

I get really teed off when I see people disregarding the safety of others.
11. Add another letter to make a word that is the objective case of 'thou' (ah, remember the good old days?)

Answer: Thee

What this word brought to mind for me was ceremony, and the lack of being able to gather to commemorate the important milestones in our lives. Graduations, memorials, weddings (with this ring, I thee wed)...
12. Add yet another letter and rearrange them to describe what you need to bite or chew (and smile at people from a distance?)

Answer: Teeth

Putting on a happy face can be difficult. But for front-line workers and those in forced isolation, sometimes a smile from family, friend or stranger is the best thing to get.
13. Now add a letter and rearrange them to make an item that you attach to an animal to keep them in place (maybe use it on our teens?)

Answer: Tether

Perhaps the comment on teens was a little too on the nose? As a parent of teens, I know it was a struggle to get them to abide by the social restraints needed to flatten the curve, but I can tell you it was just as hard to insist on the same with my 73-year-old father-in-law.

I reiterate my point from Q10: It all comes down to personal responsibility, and people need to know when to tether themselves.
14. Add the quiz's penultimate letter and rearrange to make an adverb meaning 'to that matter or circumstance' (nothing to add herein?)

Answer: Thereto

Sorry. It was the only 7-letter word I could make out of my 8-letter word.

Herein lies the problem. Therefore, abide by the regulations of the government and any amendments thereto.
15. Finally, add one last letter and rearrange them to describe how individuals work with others towards a common cause (the best way?)

Answer: Together

I have been amazed at how life changed in just a few weeks from everyone going about their business and doing their own thing within their own circles. And then, in our isolated circumstances, more effort was made by nearly everyone to reach outside our circles and offer supports where before there were none.

Together apart, indeed.
