Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In which film did Groucho Marx sing "Whatever It is, I'm Against It"?

Answer: Horse Feathers

"Whatever It is, I'm Against It" was written by Harry Ruby and Bert Kalmar, who also wrote the screenplay for 'Horse Feathers'.

'Horse Feathers' is the epic story of Professor Quincy Adams Wagstaff's attempt to ensure his college wins the annual gridiron game against Huxley. Throw in bribery, kidnapping and wooing the college widow and you have a classic 'Marx Brothers' film.
2. Who was the youngest Marx brother?

Answer: Zeppo

Zeppo Marx was the youngest brother, he was born in 1901. Chico was born in 1887. Harpo was born in 1888. Groucho was born in 1890 and Gummo, who dropped out of the family act long before the filming of the movies, was born in 1892.
3. Which of the following film characters was not played by Groucho Marx?

Answer: Pinky

Pinky was played by Harpo Marx in "Duck Soup" (1933) and "Horsefeathers" (1932). In both films Pinky was a lovable insane rogue. In "Horse Feathers" Pinky was a dogcatcher and an ice delivery man. In "Duck Soup" Pinky was a spy who, predictably enough, meandered between the sides in the conflict causing mayhem.

Groucho Marx played Proffessor Quincy Adams Wagstaff in "Horse Feathers" (1932), Captain Jeffrey T. Spaulding in "Animal Crackers" (1930) and Otis B. Driftwood in "A Night At The Opera" (1935).
4. Of the five Marx Brothers Chico, Harpo, Groucho, Gummo and Zeppo who was the last to die?

Answer: Zeppo

Zeppo Marx died in 1979. He was predeceased by Chico in 1961, Harpo in 1964 and both Gummo and Groucho who both died in 1977.
5. Which Marx Brother legally changed his name?

Answer: Harpo

Harpo's birth name was Adolph but he disliked the name and changed it to Arthur. He changed it in 1911. He was given the nickname Harpo because of his love of playing the harp. All of his screen roles are without dialogue because during his stage career a critic described him as very amusing until he spoke.
6. Who was the female actress who was the target of Groucho's humour in seven films?

Answer: Margaret Dumont

Margaret Dumont was born in 1882 and had a career in acting that spanned five decades, until her death in 1965. She was the butt of Groucho's attention in seven films where he usually expressed his undying love for her, whilst chasing other women.
7. Groucho had three children, which of the options given was not a name he gave to any of them?

Answer: Gracie

Groucho had three children Arthur (born 1921) Miriam (born 1927) who are both authors and Melinda (born 1946) who was an actress until 1972.
8. Groucho had a long running radio and television show which aired from 1947 to 1961, what was it called?

Answer: You Bet Your Life

"You Bet Your Life" was a gameshow that blended Groucho's quick fire wit and interaction with the contestants. It was a general knowledge quiz with cash prizes.
9. Which Marx brothers film did Zeppo not appear in?

Answer: A Day At The Races

"Duck Soup" (1935) was Zeppo's last movie appearance. He became disillusioned with his roles and gave up acting to become a full time show business agent.

"Duck Soup" was a satire on the futility of nationalism and war, mixed with the usual madcap Marx humour. It became popular with a whole new generation of fans at the time of the Vietnam war, as it was viewed as a condemnation of all conflicts.
10. Which tragic Hollywood actress appeared in both "Monkey Business" and "Horse Feathers"?

Answer: Thelma Todd

Thelma Todd appeared in well over 100 movies. She died at the age of thirty. She was found asphyxiated in her car and her death was ruled as suicide.
