Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. R4 has a number of news programmes throughout the day. The 13:00 news programme is known by a particular acronym. Which of the following is the correct one?

Answer: WATO

The "World at One" is one of the key news programmes of the day and runs for three quarters of an hour covering the major news stories of the day to that point.
2. From 14:15 to 15:00 R4 broadcasts a set of programmes that are not necessarily related. The strand has a particular heading. What is it?

Answer: Drama

The strand is covered by the Drama heading but I would consider "Play of the Day" fits almost better than the correct answer, though some of the stories run over several days. None of the other answers are covered by dedicated programmes on R4.
3. With no particular type of programming dominating the hours between 15:00 and 17:00, this question deals with the 17:00 to 18:00 slot. This is the late afternoon news programme "PM". Who of these has presented the programme for most of the 2000s and 2010s?

Answer: Eddie Mair

Eddie presented "PM" almost single handedly for over a decade, though he has also presented other current affairs programmes on both radio and TV.
Caroline is one of the presenters who substitutes for Eddie and Zeb was a newsreader and continuity announcer on R4 and its sister stations for over a decade.
4. With the 18:00 to 18:30 slot also being dedicated to the news, we come to the 18:30 to 19:00 slot. What type of programme occupies this slot?

Answer: Comedy shows

Although the slot can cover all the wrong answers, the main thing they have to be is funny (at least in the opinion of the commissioning editor :-)). Some shows can be quiz shows of varying degrees of seriousness - usually on Mondays and Fridays whilst other shows can be more standard sitcoms or stand ups.
5. The 19:00 to 19:15 slot has been the home of the longest-running radio soap opera in the world. What is the name of this iconic show?

Answer: "The Archers"

"The Archers" was first broadcast on 01/01/51 and there have been well over 18,000 episodes.
6. The 19:15 to 19:45 slot covers which area of national life?

Answer: The arts

"Front Row", which covers all aspects from the latest exhibitions and book releases to exhibitions of ancient history, had its initial broadcast in 1998.
7. The slots between 20:00 and 21:30 are generally some form of current affairs programme but the individual programming is quite variable. Why is the 21:30 to 22:00 slot different?

Answer: It's usually a repeat of the programme broadcast at 09:00

In most cases the repeated programme will be cut from three quarters of an hour to just the half hour.

On Fridays the whole of the hour 21:00 to 22:00 is a repeat of the 13:45 slot or Home Front if that is being broadcast.
8. Between 22:00 and 22:45 we have another news and current affairs programme. What programme takes us up to 23:00 from 22:45?

Answer: "Book at Bedtime"

Given its slot, the books that are read in this slot seem to have a surprisingly dark theme whenever I'm awake late enough to listen.
9. Assuming you're still awake at 23:00 what sort of programme would you find yourself listening to?

Answer: A comedy show

The comedy shows in this slot tend to be a bit more risqué than those broadcast in earlier slots.
10. Before a final visit to the "Shipping Forecast" it's almost time for R4 to go off air. There's a tune that's played before we make our final visit to the seas around the coasts of the British Isles. Can you name it?

Answer: "Sailing By"

"Sailing By" is rarely broadcast in full, being mostly used as a filler between the final news programme and the "Shipping Forecast".
