Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which hairstyle is commonly referred to as 'business at the front, party at the back'?

Answer: Mullet

In Australia the mullet is generally regarded as a 'bogan' hairstyle (or 'trailer-park' for those of you who aren't Australian).
I have also found places on the internet which discuss whether you have to be stupid to wear a mullet or wearing a mullet makes you stupid?
Each to his (or her) own, I say...
2. It is possible that the mullet has been a part of life right from the beginning. One of the earliest known examples of the mullet can be found on which famous sculpture?

Answer: The Great Sphinx

The Great Sphinx is thought to date back to somewhere between 4,500 and 10,000 years with the 'short at the front and long at the back' hairstyle clearly visible.
There is also evidence of the mullet in many ancient civilisations, such as the Vikings and Aztecs.
3. Although many ancient civilisations wore the mullet, it was specifically banned in the Roman Army. Why was this?

Answer: It was too easy for enemies to grab the hair and slit the throat of the wearer.

You would be hard-pressed to find a mullet in any of today's armies as the short hair still prevails, although now it is considered more for appearance in uniform than the impracticality of a hairstyle.
4. Which American Revolutionary War General is credited with bringing the mullet from Europe to America?

Answer: Horatio Gates

Horatio Gates was an American general during the Revolutionary War. He was credited with the American victory at the Battle of Saratoga, and blamed for losing the Battle of Camden.
Although George Washington, Benedict Arnold and Daniel Morgan were Generals in the same war, neither has been identified as either wearing a mullet or introducing it to the American people.
5. In which decades did the mullet make its first appearance on our screens?

Answer: 1960s & 70s

The mullet made its first appearance in the 1960s and 70s, but didn't catch on with the general public until the 1980s and 90s. Tom Jones in the 60s and David Bowie in the 70s seem to be the first people to take up the hairstyle. Being a unisex hairstyle, Florence Henderson from "The Brady Bunch" also wore a mullet in the early 70s.
Stars like Michael Bolton, Billy Ray Cyrus and Phil Collins helped to bring the hairstyle to the forefront of fashion.
6. Men are not the only ones to suffer from thinking that a mullet is a good look. Women have also fallen under its spell. Which popular TV mum wore a mullet?

Answer: Carol Brady "The Brady Bunch"

Carol Brady (aka Florence Henderson) wore what is referred to as a 'fashion mullet'. It is not as big or long as a 'classic mullet' but is quite discreet. From the front, it just looks like a short haircut but at the back the hair is only an inch or two long and either curls slightly or lays flat against the neck.
7. According to the Oxford English Dictionary, which music group 'apparently coined, and certainly popularised' the mullet by singing about the hairstyle in the mid 1990s?

Answer: The Beastie Boys

The Beastie Boys' song 'Mullet Head' uses the terms 'mullet' and 'mullet head' in reference to wearers of the hairstyle. The 'Grand Royal Magazine', a fan publication of The Beastie Boys, referenced the mullet in a 1995 edition making it the first published use of the term.
8. The Germans have their own term for the mullet. What is it?

Answer: Vokuhila

Vokuhila is an acronym for 'vorne-kurz-und-hinten-lang', which basically means 'short in front and long in back'. Unfortunately, due to the worldwide focus on Germany at a time when the mullet was in fashion, the German stereotype of a mullet is that of soccer teams and their fans in the 1980s.

Mähne is 'horse mane', a German term for long hair (but not relating to the mullet). Fisch-Schnitt is 'fish cut', and Affklaff is 'ape gape' - similar to the English 'ape drape', another term for a mullet.

(Thanks to editor Bloomsby for his help with the alternate answers for this question).
9. From the 1980s to the 1990s, the general look of the mullet changed. What was the major difference between the two?

Answer: The 80s mullet was straight whereas the 90s mullet was curly.

The 90s curly version of the mullet is often called the 'French mullet' or Mulle (pronounced moo-lay).
There is no reason that I can find that explains why the curly mullet is called the Mulle, but I am assuming it's because the hairstyle is more fancy than the original, therefore it needs a fancier sounding name. Kind of like when you pronounce Target (department store) as 'tar-jay'.
10. In the 1990s, The Vandals (punk rock band) wrote a song called 'I've got an ape drape', about the mullet. They used several geographic names for the mullet but which of the following was NOT a name they used?

Answer: Horse Mane

'Norco Neck Warmer' is used in Norco, California. 'Forbidden Hair' is used in Europe, and 'Hockey Hair' is used in Canada and Sweden. Other terms used in the song are 'Ape Drape' (from Riverside, California), 'Achey Breaky Hair' (Nashville, Tennessee), 'Mullet' (Hoboken, New Jersey), and 'Shom' (Florida, USA).
The song also linked the hairstyle to the type of people who appear on "Jerry Springer" or as fans of Toby Keith (an American Country singer-songwriter).
11. Which country is known as the 'mullet capital of Europe'?

Answer: Spain

Spain has always held the title of 'mullet capital of Europe', although at one stage almost lost the title to the Czech Republic.
The mullet is particularly popular in Barcelona, in the province of Catalonia, and amongst the young of two different ethnic groups - separatists from the Basque Country and gypsies.
The Spanish mullet is lighter as well as shorter than the 'classic' mullet. It usually doesn't extend beyond the neck and only tends to include the last inch beyond the hairline.
12. In the UK and Australia, the mullet is associated with men participating in which type of sport?

Answer: Football (Soccer & AFL)

Football players of both codes (Australian Rules & Soccer) are well known for their wearing of the mullet. The hairstyle was particularly prominent in these sports in the 1980s, although the mullet is enjoyed a resurgence in the late 2000s.
The mullet is also associated with thugs and Central and Eastern Europeans (UK), and Lebanese-Australian youths and bogans (Australia).
13. The US also has their fair share of mullet wearers. Apart from sports fans and rednecks, according to the stereotype, what type of musician wears a mullet?

Answer: Heavy metal bands

When thinking heavy metal bands (and performers) with mullets, think: Guns'n'Roses, Motley Crue, Poison, Alice Cooper - all in the 80s. Unfortunately, the stereotype still sticks even though it may not be true to the genre.
According to stereotype, reggae singers all have dreadlocks, but there doesn't seem to be any kind of stereotype for R&B or opera singers.
14. The 'home of the modern mullet' is considered to be in the southern US. But what addition makes it a true 'redneck mullet'?

Answer: Tattoos and a moustache

Tattoos and a moustache are the necessary additions to make sure your mullet is truly redneck, and although the moustache is not obligatory for women, some do mange this feat as well.
You will find examples of the 'redneck mullet' in movies such as 'Joe Dirt'.
15. How can one write a quiz without reference to the most famous wearer of the mullet? Which country singer will probably remain more well-known for his mullet hairstyle than his music?

Answer: Billy Ray Cyrus

Billy Ray Cyrus brought the mullet to the world with his rendition of 'Achy Breaky Heart'. His album 'Some Gave All' is the best selling debut album of all time for a solo male artist, and is the longest time spent by a debut artist at number 1 on the Billboard 200, at 17 weeks. Not bad for a guy who is known more for his hair and famous daughter (Miley Cyrus) than his music.
