Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What event did Ric Flair defend his Intercontinental Championship against Hunter Hearst Helmsley?

Answer: Taboo Tuesday 2005

The Pay Per View took place on November 1, 2005 in San Diego, California. It was a Steel Catch Match in which Ric Flair defended his Intercontinental Championship. His opponent on this Tuesday night was the "Cerebral Assassin" Hunter Hearst Helmsley.

The two men were involved in a bitter feud. The feud was only made more violent because the two men were former best friends. This was a bloody battle between Ric and Hunter. Ric was made to bleed first at the pummeling Hunter gave him. Ric held his own and later on lacerated Hunter. Hunter was not as concerned about winning the title as hurting Flair. Flair was the victor in this bloody hard fought bout.

The crowd cheered loudly as both combatants individually left the ring.
2. Who did Kevin Owens defeat for his first reign as Intercontinental Champion?

Answer: Ryback

Ryback had just returned after battling a staph infection. Kevin Owens had been harassing Ryback for a few weeks leading up to their bout. The two wrestlers met at the "Night of Champions" 2015 Pay Per View. I fully expected Ryback to retain his title. Owens however was victorious in claiming his first major championship on the main roster. Kevin had only recently joined the main roster from NXT.

He was still the NXT Champion when he debuted. This was not Kevin's first run at a WWE Championship. He had challenged John Cena earlier for his WWE United States Heavyweight Championship unsuccessfully. Kevin to his credit did give John a run for his money though.
3. What kind of match did CM Punk and William Regal have for the Intercontinental Championship?

Answer: No Disqualification Match

William Regal was the reigning Intercontinental Champion going into the bout. He was accompanied to the ring by his valet, Layla El. Punk and Regal had been engaged in a battle for the Intercontinental Championship for weeks. Punk and Regal both held wins over the other via disqualification.

The title does not change hands on a disqualification victory. Regal and Punk met for a third time on "Monday Night Raw" in Rosemont, Illinois. This was Punk's hometown as he hailed from Chicago. The bout was a strong fought one and the combatants punished one another. Layla interfered in order to break a submission move Punk had on Regal. Punk was successful when he hit his finishing maneuver "Go To Sleep" on Regal.
4. Who was the winner of the Battle Royale at the Pay Per View event "Battleground"?

Answer: The Miz

The Pay Per View took place on July 20, 2014 in Tampa, Florida. Wade Barrett had to vacate the title due to a shoulder injury. The bout was a 19 man Battle Royale Match for the Intercontinental Championship. The match included superstars such as Ziggler, The Miz, and Zack Ryder.

The Miz was thrown over the top of the rope, but did not touch the floor. He waited until Ziggler was the last participant and then eliminated Dolph. This was The Miz's third reign as Intercontinental Champion. The two combatants would trade the title back and forth until "Monday Night Raw" on September 22, 2014 when Dolph regained the title and subsequently ended the feud between them.
5. Who defeated Lance Storm to end his reign as Intercontinental Champion?

Answer: Edge

This was the opening bout of the 2001 "Summerslam" Pay Per View. Lance was a member of the ECW faction during the Invasion angle. Edge represented the WWF. Lance was first in the ring and asking for no more shenanigans when Edge's entrance theme came on. These two men battled hard from the opening bell. The two combatants would trade blow after blow with no advantage going to either. Edge would catch Lance Storm off the top rope and slam him hard. At one point in the bout, Christian came down to ringside to aid his best friend, Edge. Christian accidentally speared Edge while trying to help Edge. Edge was able to recover thus ending Lance's reign as Intercontinental Champion.

Lance Storm has always been one of my favorite professional wrestlers. He has held major titles in all the promotions he has wrestled in. This included the WCW United States Heavyweight Championship. Lance formed a successful tag team with Justin Credible in the old ECW too.
6. There here been several men scheduled to win the Intercontinental Championship. Brutus "The Barber" Beefcake was one of them. What happened to Brutus that prevented him from winning the WWF Intercontinental Championship?

Answer: Boating accident

Brutus was at the height of his popularity with his barber gimmick. He was slated to win the Intercontinental Championship from the reigning champion the Honky Tonk Man at the annual "Summerslam" Pay Per View in 1990. Brutus was however involved in a boating accident that severely injured his face. He would miss close to two years of action before he could return to the ring. Brutus had to have his entire face reconstructed.

Brutus was injured while assisting fellow wrestler and friend, Brian Blair. The driver of the boat had pulled off causing a parasailor to crash into Brutus's face. Brutus also stated the WWF also had promised him two times before that he would win the title. Brutus was a former WWF World Tag Team Champion with Greg Valentine however.

Jake "The Snake" Roberts was also supposed to be the Intercontinental Champion. He was legitimately hurt by the then reigning champion, The Honky Tonk Man. Honky was supposed to strike Jake over the head with a balsa wood guitar, but hit him with a solid wood guitar instead. Honky Tonk Man claims this was an oversight on his part;he said he picked up the wrong guitar accidentally.
7. Who defeated Ezekiel Jackson to win his first Intercontinental Championship?

Answer: Cody Rhodes

Cody Rhodes won his first Intercontinental Championship by beating the much larger Ezekiel. The bout was physically dominated by Jackson. Cody was able to kick Ezekiel and daze him enabling him to apply his finishing maneuver "Crossroads". Cody would have DiBiase who was at ringside place a paper bag over Ezekiel's head. Cody would exit the ring when he saw Jackson was coming to. DiBiase who had his back turned to Jackson was beaten up while Rhodes looked on. Jackson would power press DiBiase above his head and throw him from the ring.
8. What Pay Per View did Christian win his first Intercontinental Championship?

Answer: Unforgiven

Christian would defeat his former tag team partner and friend, Edge for his first reign as Intercontinental Champion. The bout was part of the 2001 "Unforgiven" Pay Per View. The two men would bring all they had to the bout. Captain Charisma would be the victor on this night. Edge and Christian would trade the belt between them before Edge would be the eventual winner of their feud.
9. Don Muraco and Jimmy Snuka had an intense rivalry. Who was Muraco's manager during their feud?

Answer: Captain Lou

Muraco and Snuka battles over the Intercontinental Championship are the stuff of legend. Captain Lou was Muraco's manager at the time. Lou was known mostly for being the manager of tag team champions. The feud between the two hit the pinnacle of it's rivalry at Madison Square Garden.

The bout was a Steel Cage Match for the Intercontinental Championship. A beaten and bloody Muraco would win the match and retain his title. Snuka however wanted to punish Muraco more. Snuka would climb to the top of the 15 foot steel cage and dive off onto Muraco.

This is one of my top five favorite bouts of all time. It is surprising to me that Snuka never won the Intercontinental Championship. His performance in their bout wad definitely deserving of a reign as Intercontinental Champion.
10. During the Chris Jericho versus Kane bout for the Intercontinental Championship two men interfered. Besides Hunter Hearst Helmsley, who was the other wrestler to try and help Jericho against Kane?

Answer: Ric Flair

This was Jericho's fifth reign as Intercontinental Champion. Kane was also one half of the World Tag Team Champions with Gregory Helms. Kane dominated the early part of the match with Jericho on constant defense. "Nature Boy" Ric Flair would come down to ringside early in the bout.

He would try to help Jericho by distracting the referee. Flair would soon be ejected from ringside, but not before Kane got in some blows. Jericho had started working on Kane's knee in order to disable his much larger opponent. Hunter came down to the ring to help ensure Jericho a victort. Ultimately Kane would secure the win by pinfall.
