Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The photo shows the board (the five cards in the middle) in a Texas Hold'em game surrounded by four hands. Of these four hands, which hand would be the winner? (If you have trouble seeing the cards click on the photo to enlarge it.)

Answer: 8s9s

In this case the 8s9s gives one player a straight flush (7s8s9sTsJs), the JhTh gives one player four of a kind (JcJdJhJsTs), the TcTd gives one player a full house (JcJdJsTdTs) and the 8d9h gives one player a straight (7s8d9hTsJs). Of these hands the straight flush would win. The hands are given in the order of their ranks - straight flush, four of a kind, full house, straight.
2. The photo shows the board (the five cards in the middle) in a Texas Hold'em game surrounded by four hands. Of these four hands, which hand would give you a straight? (You are not looking for the winner here.)

Answer: KcTc

In this case the KcTc would make the straight (KcQhJhTc9c). AhTh would give you a flush and the winning hand but this question was about seeing the straight, not the winning hand. The 7h5d would give you four cards to a straight but a straight requires five cards. The 6s6d would give you trips.
3. The photo shows the board (the five cards) and your hand in a Texas Hold'em game. What is the best hand you can make with this board?

Answer: Ace high flush

The best hand that you can have is the Ace high flush (AdKd5d4d2d). The wheel is also possible (Ad2d3c4d5d) but a flush beats a straight. In this case the Ace high flush would almost be the nuts with only one possible hand beating it. If your opponent had the 3d6d they would have a straight flush and that would beat you but that is the only hand that can beat you.
4. The photo shows the board (the five cards in the middle) in a Texas Hold'em game surrounded by four hands. Of these four hands, which hand would be the winner?

Answer: AsAc

In this case the pocket rockets (AsAc) would hold up and would win the hand with a full house, aces full of deuces (AsAdAc2s2c). Although two other hands would have full houses, the 8d8h and the Ah2h, these full houses would be inferior, eights full of deuces and deuces full of aces respectively. The 8s7d would only be two pair (8s8c7h7dAd).
5. The photo shows the board (the five cards) and your hand in a Texas Hold'em game. Do you have the nuts? (The nuts means an unbeatable hand.)

Answer: No, four or more hands can beat mine.

Although you have a strong hand with a full house, there are still six hands that can beat you. If your opponent held pocket tens (TsTc in this case) he would have four of a kind and beat you. If your opponent held either pocket kings or pocket queens they would have a better full house than you. Also if your opponent holds either KT or QT they would have a better full house and beat you. Finally, if you opponent hold either remaining ten and the last eight for T8 they would have a better full house than you. So in this case six hands can beat you - pocket tens, pocket queens, pocket kings, KT, QT, and T8.
6. The photo shows the board (the five cards in the middle) in a Texas Hold'em game surrounded by four hands. Of these four hands, which hand would give you the steel wheel?

Answer: 3c4c

Although the 3d4s would make a wheel (Ac2c3d4s5c), it would not be the steel wheel. The steel wheel is a straight flush so in this instance only the 3c4c would complete the steel wheel (Ac2c3c4c5c). The other two hands would give you trips but not the steel wheel. With three clubs on the board, either trip aces or trip kings would be vulnerable.
7. The photo shows the board (the five cards) and your hand in a Texas Hold'em game. Do you have the nuts? (The nuts means an unbeatable hand.)

Answer: No, one hand can beat me.

Although you have a monster hand with four kings (KsKhKdKcAc), one hand could still beat you. If your opponent held the QcJc they would have a royal flush (AcKcQcJcTc) and that would beat your quad kings. It is very rare for this to happen but it has happened at the World Series of Poker Main Event where a royal flush beat quad aces.
8. The photo shows the board (the five cards in the middle) in a Texas Hold'em game surrounded by four hands. Of these four hands, which hand would give you Broadway?

Answer: KdQd

Broadway is defined as an ace high straight and only one of these hands completes Broadway - the KdQd for AsKdQdJsTs. The Ks9s, known as canine (K-9), gives you an ace high flush but that is not what you are looking for here. In this case, although Broadway is a strong hand, it would be a vulnerable hand because of the three spades on board and the flush possibility.
9. The photo shows the board (the five cards) and your hand in a Texas Hold'em game. Do you have the nuts? (The nuts means an unbeatable hand.)

Answer: Yes, I have the nuts.

In this case you would indeed have the nuts with quad deuces. Only a straight flush or higher quads could beat you and these are not possible on this board because there are not three of any one suit and no other card is paired. Someone having a wheel or full house would definitely be possible and would be what you would hope they would have so that you could extract value from your quad deuces.
10. The photo shows the board (the five cards in the middle) in a Texas Hold'em game surrounded by four hands. Of these four hands, which hand would win?

Answer: Ts7s

With this board and these hands, the Tc7c would win by making a straight (JhTs9c8s7s). The straight beats the trip threes and the two pair, kings and jacks. The 7d6d would be a busted straight draw needing one more card to complete the straight. This would be considered an action flop because even if the trip threes bets on the flop, it is highly unlikely the straight draw folds because it is open ended meaning there are eight outs, any six or jack would complete the straight.
