Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of these animals is NOT a mammal?

Answer: frog

A frog is an amphibian (can live on land and in water). The life cycle of a frog goes something like this:
When the frog begins life, it is in an egg made of transparent (see-through) jelly. The frog-to-be is a tiny black dot inside.
A bit later, it hatches out and becomes a tadpole, with a tiny black tail. The tadpole will eat the jelly of their egg (frog-spawn) and then small plants clinging to bigger plants, known as algae.
Next, the tadpole will develop hind (back) legs. Whilst this is happening, inside the tadpole, lungs are beginning to develop. The tadpole will start going to the surface for air and its diet will change. They will most likely eat larger plants and sometimes even other tadpoles! Their tail will get shorter.
Finally, your tadpole will have become a frog.
2. Which of these is a rodent?

Answer: squirrel

Squirrels are animals that many people are not aware are rodents. Squirrels sometimes eat out of bird feeders as they love nuts. Squirrel Nutkin was a famous squirrel from Beatrix Potter's stories. Other rodents include: gerbils, mice, rats, hamsters and many others. The largest rodent is the capybara, found mainly in South America. It can weigh up to 45 kilograms!
3. What is a baby rabbit called?

Answer: kitten

A kitten (or kit) matures at about six months of age. The rabbit is a mammal as it gives birth to live young. There are several types of rabbit including house, giant and more. There are at least 50 different species!
4. Which of these is NOT true of an insect?

Answer: they all have wings

Insects can either have wings or not, but to be an insect, they must have six legs. If they don't, they're not insects. A spider has eight legs, so it is an arachnid. They're creepy enough anyway, minus the legs!

FUN FACT: Earwigs have wings!
5. Which of these is NOT poisonous to or bad for dogs?

Answer: turkey

Onions, chocolate, grapes and buttercups are all poisonous to dogs, so never, ever give your dog any if you have one. Some will just give them a bad tummy ache, others might kill them!
6. What do fish use to breathe?

Answer: gills

Gills are - unlike lungs - on the outside of a fish. Fish gain their oxygen from the water so they don't need air. In fact, a fish would die without being in water. This is because a fish's gills are always moving. They pump the water over their gills which extract the oxygen, thus allowing them to breathe underwater! Fish can't extract oxygen from the air, so they'd die out of water.
7. About how many species of mammals are there in the world?

Answer: more than 1000

According to 'WikiAnswers', there are 4260, but 'Mammal Species of the World' holds even more with 4,629 recognised species. Mammals are very different to reptiles because:

Mammals give birth to live young, while reptiles lay eggs.

Mammals are warm blooded and reptiles are cold blooded.

Mammals tend to have fur or skin while reptiles more often have scales.

There are, of course exceptions, like the egg laying mammal, the platypus.
8. What is a male duck called?

Answer: drake

Female ducks are sometimes just called 'ducks' but are also known as hens. A 'mallard' is a type of duck. Male mallards (try saying that ten times quick) are brightly coloured with green on their heads, but female mallards are brown.
9. Which of these animals is fastest when running?

Answer: pronghorn antelope

The pronghorn antelope has been known to reach speeds of up to sixty-one miles per hour and is the second fastest land mammal in the world. It is slower only than the cheetah, which has reached speeds up to seventy miles per hour!
10. How many of these animals are wild cats? Leopard, cheetah, wolf, puma, panther and husky.

Answer: 4

Pumas, cheetahs, panthers and leopards are all species of wild cat. Wolves are wild dogs and the husky is somewhere in between a house dog (domestic) and being a wild dog. Wolves come in many different types, including Arctic wolves, grey wolves and red wolves. Grey wolves tend to be the most common. Dogs have evolved from wolves, so stop and think - is it really possible that little chihuahua could have evolved from being a wolf all those years ago? But they would have had plenty of time - people believe it was between 12000 to 15000 years ago.
