Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is a vacuole in a cell?

Answer: Place to store food, water, wastes, and other materials.

Plant cells have larger vacuoles than animal cells, although they both do the same thing. Vacuoles are like the storage for the cells.
2. This is the 'freeway' or 'walkway' of a cell that the Golgi Bodies 'drive' on.

Answer: Endoplasmic Reticulum

The Golgi Body takes the materials sent from the endoplasmic reticulum and transports them to other parts of the cells.
3. You can find (a) ______ and (a) ______ only in a plant cell.

Answer: Cell wall & Chloroplasts

Mitochondria & ribosomes, vacuoles & nucleus, and cytoplasm & lysosomes are in both plant and animal cells. Cell wall & chloroplasts however, are only in plant cells.
4. What do lysosomes do?

Answer: They "clean up" the cells.

Lysomsomes (like Lysol!), clean up the cell. Wastes are collected and transported out of the cell with the help of lysosomes.
5. In plant cells, _______ makes up the cell wall.

Answer: cellulose

The cell wall is made up of cellulose; a stiff compound that makes the cell wall rigid and strong. People cannot digest cellulose itself.
6. Where do you find most of a cell's DNA?

Answer: In the nucleus.

DNA, short for deoxyribonucleic acid, contains the blueprint for life. DNA is made up of two strands that wind around each other to form a structure called a double helix.
7. The ________ is "brain" of the cell.

Answer: Nucleus

The nucleus stores the information the cell needs for life. It controls the cell and tells each organelle what to do.
8. The cell membrane is _____________.

Answer: selectively permeable

'Selectively permeable' means that the cell membrane won't allow everything into a cell, or all of it. If water wanted to enter a cell, not all of the water would be let in at once, although eventually all of the water would enter and the cell would pop.
9. The organelle is a part of a cell that __________________.

Answer: has a specific function

The organelle is anything that carries out a specific function, not many roles, like the choice "transports all of the wastes out of a cell and lets only sugars enter".
10. What is the "powerhouse" of a cell?

Answer: Mitochondria

The mitochondria break down sugars and make energy; not to be confused with the ribosomes that make protein. If you chose nucleus, close, but the nucleus uses energy. Cellulose is stored in plant cell walls that protect the cell.
