Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The sun was bursting rays over the dolphin when it jumped out of the clear blue sea.

Answer: Stingray

...burSTING RAYs...

While stingrays and dolphins are both marine creatures, a dolphin is a mammal and a stingray is a fish. An easy way to to tell a fish from a mammal is to see how they breathe. A dolphin breathes air like humans, and has lungs and a blowhole to blow out used air. A stingray, like most fish, captures oxygen from the water as the water passes through the fish's gills.
2. Jill amazes me with how much she knows about this South American animal and jaguars.

Answer: Llama

...JiLL AMAzes

Llamas and jaguars are both South American mammals though jaguars can live in Central America and occasionally in south west USA. A jaguar is a feline and is about the same size as Africa's cheetah, though not quite as fast! A llama is related to camels though they live on different continents.
3. Trish, awkward looking most of the time, stood straight and tall when she carried her pet eagle on her arm.

Answer: Hawk

...TrisH AWKward...

Hawk and eagles are birds of prey. This means they hunt other animals like rodents for food. As such, all birds of prey are fast flyers, have very good vision and have strong bills and sharp talons to kill their prey.
Hawks are medium sized birds with long tails for good steering. Hawks hunt by hiding in tree hollows then darting out of concealment to grab their prey.
Eagles are large birds with long broad wings and big feet. Eagles, because of their superior vision, hunt whilst flying and use their speed in flight to capture surprised prey with their talons.
4. Is a marmot terrifying? No, it is quite a timid animal.

Answer: Otter

...marmOT TERrifying

Otters are medium sized carnivorous animals that live in a semi-aquatic or marine environment. They feed on fish and shellfish and sometimes frogs, eels and small birds. They are powerful swimmers and have strong webbed feet.
Marmots are large squirrels that live in mountainous regions of the Americas, Europe and Asia. They eat nuts, berries and flowers. A groundhog is an example of a marmot.
5. The eyes of oxen are quite large compared with eyes of this smaller mammal.

Answer: Fox

...oF OXen...

Foxes are related to dogs and are generally a little smaller than their canine cousins. All twelve species of vulpines have a pointy snout, upright pointy ears, and a large bushy tail called a brush. They are found worldwide except in Antarctica. They are known in the folklore as cunning animals and adapt well to urban environments but not domestication.
An ox or oxen (when there is more than one) are not a particular breed of cattle but refer to domesticated cattle that are trained to do hard work like ploughing or as pack animals transporting goods from field to market. In Australia and India an ox is called a bullock.
6. Stormy or calm seas, it does not matter, sharks will hunt for food regardless.

Answer: Orca

...OR CAlm...

An orca is a another name for a killer whale. The first name is preferred as this mammal is not a whale but a dolphin. In fact, it is the largest dolphin. They are generally 5-7 meters in length and weigh about three tonnes. They have distinct black and white markings. They eat a variety of meat - mainly seals, fish and small whales. They can be domesticated but have been known to kill their handlers on occasion.
Sharks are fish and there is a variety of species, the largest being the great white shark which can be as big as an orca. Sharks are distinguished from other fish by having a skeleton made from cartilage rather than bone.
7. The judge, a man called Leo, pardoned the thief for taking a tiger from the zoo

Answer: Leopard

...LEO PARDoned...

The leopard is one of the five "big cats". The name is a compound name of lion and panther as it was once thought this species was a cross between a lion and a panther. They are found in Africa south of the Sahara desert and eastern Asia. Males are larger than females and are about 90 cm tall at the shoulder and are about 90-150 cm long plus have a tail about 60cm long. They have a golden coat with distinctive spots but are often confused with the smaller, faster cheetah that has a similar coat.
8. The wooden spar rotted over time because of its constant use by toucans as a roosting place.

Answer: Parrot

....sPAR ROTted...

There are nearly 400 species of parrot found across tropical and subtropical areas of the world. All are characterised by their large curved bills, upright stance and toe arrangement - two toes point forward and two back. They are medium sized birds often with very colourful plumage. They are very intelligent and when domesticated as pets can be taught to speak a few words.

Toucans are only distantly related to parrots. There are five species, all characterised by a colourful bill which can be over half the length of the bird. The most recognised species is the Toco Toucan which is the largest species and can grow up to 65 cm in length.
9. There was a nasty rumour that the deli on Main Street sold cat food.

Answer: Lion

...deLI ON...

The lion is the most recognisable of the big cats. Male lions can be up to 3.5 meters long and can weigh up to 250 kg. Males have a large mane, whereas most females do not and even when they do it is not as full as the male mane. The lion is an apex predator which means it has no known predators itself. Some subspecies of lion are now critically endangered. Outside the grasslands of Africa, the lion only exists in one small area of India.
10. "Does the fish you caught feel slippery?", asked Josh. "No more than a snake.", replied Matthew.

Answer: eel

...fEEL ...

An eel is an elongated fish. It looks like a snake as it does not have the same fins as a fish. The fins are absent or are much smaller than other fishes. Eels can vary in size from 5cm to 4m.
