Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the beginning of the book, with whom does Kristina live?

Answer: Aunt Katarina

When Kristina's father died, she was taken to live with her aunt, because the Rad (the men appointed to rule until Kristina turned 18) suspected her mother of being disloyal to the Swedish throne.
2. Kristina records many nightmares, one of which she blames on being dropped as a baby by her father.

Answer: False

Kristina does mention being dropped on her head as a baby, but it was Frau Anna, her first nurse, who dropped her.
3. Just before Aunt Katarina dies, what does she whisper to Kristina?

Answer: Marry Karl

Aunt Katarina and Uncle Johann had hoped for Kristina to marry Karl (their eldest son), as it would make Karl king of Sweden.
4. How many cousins did Kristina have?

Answer: 4

Kristina had 4 cousins: Karl, Marie Euphrosyne, Eleonore, and Adolf Johann.
5. How old was Kristina when she learned of her father's death?

Answer: six

On November 12, 1632, Kristina's father, Gustav II Adolf, became separated from his troops. Hours later, his horse galloped back to the Swedish lines with pistols still in the holsters. When his body was found, all his belongings were stolen. News reached Kristina on December 8, 1632, her 6th birthday.
6. Kristina's mother was never caught in an act of disloyalty to Sweden.

Answer: False

In 1639, the Rad seized a letter written by Kristina's own mother addressed to King Christian IV of Denmark, Sweden's worst enemy since before 1523. The letter expressed plans to marry her dead husband's fiercest rival!
7. In the book, Kristina is told the story of Ebba Brahe, who her father had loved before he met Kristina's mother. Why did he marry Kristina's mother instead of Ebba?

Answer: Ebba was not of royal birth

Gustav II Adolf (Kristina's father) was deeply in love with Ebba, but could not get permission to marry her, as she was not of royal blood. For years the young lovers wrote secret letters, while Gustav tried to sway his mother's mind to approve the marriage. Still she refused.
Gustav eventually obeyed his mother's wishes and found a woman of suitable birth. Ebba was Gustav's first love.
8. When Karl and Kristina had a fencing duel, who won?

Answer: Kristina

Kristina won, and Karl challenged her to another match.
9. Who did Kristina marry?

Answer: Nobody. She was single and became Catholic

Kristina never did marry Karl, as her aunt had wished. Sweden was a Lutheran country, so Kristina could not remain queen and also convert to Catholicism. On June 6th, 1654, less than 4 years after taking the throne, Kristina abdicated, naming Karl her successor. Kristina then moved to Rome, where she was baptized into the Catholic Church on Christmas Eve of 1654.

She took the name "Christina Alexandra".
10. How old was Kristina when she died?

Answer: 62

On April 19, 1689, Kristina died at the age of 62.
