Kallik is a polar bear cub. Kallik has a brother named Tiqqiq whom she looks for throughout the book after she is parted from him. Kallik's mother, Nisa, is killed by killer whales trying to help her across the channel to the other side of the ice; her brother is on the other side. Killer whales are also called orcas.

Answer: she pretended to be sick

Lusa is a small black bear cub who was born in the Bear Bowl and wants to see what it's like in the wild. After making a promise to an Oka, Toklo's mother, to find Toklo and tell him that his mother loved him, and to protect him, she decides she is keeping her promise. She pretends to be sick knowing the flat-faces would put her in a room and she could escape from there.

Answer: he runs into another bear's territory

Toklo is forced to leave by his mother, who blames him for Tobi's death because he didn't wake her up when he died. His mother tells him that she thinks he should be dead. Toklo is scared by then and runs to wherever he could go. After Toklo is tired of running he gets hungry and wanders into another bear's territory.

Answer: she was finally at the white bear gathering place

Kallik meets Purnaq, an elder white bear, who tells her all about the gathering place. She doesn't realize where she is until she lifts her head up and sees all these different polar bears wondering helplessly on their own. She then was satisfied she was at the gathering place because she thought that was where Tiqqiq must be... but he wasn't.

After Lusa decided that she was starving, she was so desperate she went into the humans' trash cans and ate as much food as she could find. As she came across the potato sticks she decided that those were the best things that she had ever eaten in her whole life.

As she traveled on through the night to reach the bear shaped mountain she came across more potato sticks and ate them happily.

Toklo gets so hungry that he just decides to steal two cubs' salmon that they caught, because he knew he couldn't catch any and he hadn't eaten in days. He stole some squirrels from a different grizzly after his mother had chased him away, and he ate flower roots from a different territory. Toklo then realized that he now should not take food from other animals because it can result in death.

Kallik and all the other bears besides Lusa know to keep away from death sticks (guns) because they make very loud noises that hit their target and kill them. The humans are the only things that have the death sticks. Sometimes humans are good, some are bad, you never know when you can truly trust one, if you are a bear.

Lusa finally came across the lakes Oka had told her about in the Bear Bowl. At that moment she was amazed to realize she was actually coming close to keeping her promise; finding Toklo.
Lusa didn't know exactly where Toklo was going to be but she knew he was near. Lusa finally crossed a river that Oka had also told her about, and was getting anxious knowing she was getting even closer.

Answer: shape-shift into other animals

Toklo was wondering off, and heard some humans calling and yelping. He soon saw a grizzly cub run past him who looked injured. The smooth-pelts had dogs which were released, chasing Toklo and Ujurak. Ujurak the next morning turned into a human. Ujurak ended up turning into a big black bird, a human, a salmon, and an eagle which caught a mountain goat for them to eat.

Answer: killing Nanuk

Kallik was carried out to the ocean to wait while the water froze and be watched by her 'new mother' Nanuk. The plane had problems with the cage and the cage dropped to earth shaking everything up, and hurting Kallik's ears. Kallik looked up at Nanuk and she was coughing up blood, lying on her back. Kallik knew something bad had happened, as Nanuk told her to stay strong and go on without her.

After those words, Nanuk stopped breathing and died.
