Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. An orchestra needs someone in charge, to bring all the instruments together. Who is normally in charge of an orchestra?

Answer: Conductor

The conductor's primary duty is to unify the performers for their performance.
2. In some musical arrangements a triangle is played. What instrument group within the orchestra does a triangle fall into?

Answer: Percussion

Percussion instruments produce sound by one part striking, scraping or rubbing against another part of the instrument. With the triangle, music is produced when metal beater causes the triangle to vibrate.
3. Most orchestras have a piano in them. What instrument group is the piano part of?

Answer: Percussion

It is in the percussion section because of the hammers hitting the strings.
4. All stringed instruments have four strings.

Answer: False

Whilst some of the main stringed instruments do have four strings, a lot of others do not. A guitar is a good example, having in some cases four, six or twelve strings.
5. Whilst strolling around the woodwind section, someone referred to an instrument as a "liquorice stick." What instrument could this be?

Answer: Clarinet

The clarinet is sometimes called by this name because of its shape and colour.
6. Just by the woodwind section is the brass section. One of the horns in the brass section has a name that connects it to a country. What instrument is it?

Answer: French Horn

Interestingly, the French horn actually originated in Germany. If all the curls on the French horn were opened up and stretched out straight, it would stretch for over twenty feet.
7. A full-size orchestra, also known as a "symphony" or "philharmonic orchestra," normally has about 100 musicians in it, or in some cases a lot more.

Answer: True

Sometimes there is a need for a smaller orchestra, which is known as a "chamber orchestra." This would normally be 50 or fewer musicians.
8. A harp is often seen and used in an orchestra. Of what group within the orchestra would this instrument be a member?

Answer: Strings

A harp with a pillar is a frame harp, but can also be called an open harp. They can vary in size, larger ones being played whilst the base is on the floor, smaller ones with the base on someone's lap.
9. I know we are talking about an orchestra and not sport, but someone just asked where their "score" was. What were they referring to?

Answer: Sheet Music

A musical score is a written form of musical composition used to ensure that the music is played as the composer intended and that when it is reproduced it is consistent.
10. If the orchestra was playing Tchaikovsky's "1812 Overture," what unusual implement/item might they need in the orchestra to make the performance authentic?

Answer: Cannon

Tchaikovsky's "1812 Overture" was originally written to celebrate Russia's defence of their motherland against Napoleon's "Grande Armee" in 1812.
