Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. We split our group in half and the first group starts singing 'Make new friends but keep the old', then the rest of the group starts from the beginning singing the same words. What is this method of singing called?

Answer: Round

'Make New Friends' is the name of this song and the way it was sung is called a round. These rounds can go on and on with each group singing all the way through the song. One of the best examples of a round is 'Row, Row, Row Your Boat'. In that case, it works well to have four different groups starting at four different times. Another fun example is 'Three Blind Mice'.
2. If you use your fingers, hands, and arms to tell the story while you're singing 'All night, all day, angels watching over me my Lord', what would you call that?

Answer: Signing

The song is 'All Night, All Day'. Sign language or signing is used to communicate with people who can't hear. Even though deaf people can't hear the words to music, some feel the music through vibrations and being able to see the words by watching singers who are also using sign language is a wonderful way to share with the deaf community.
3. Our next campfire song is 'Swing Low, Sweet Chariot'. The song sounds wonderful when sung by three groups, all singing different words and different notes. Is this method of singing called harmonizing?

Answer: Yes

This is a spiritual song written by Wallace Willis more than 100 years ago. 'Swing low, sweet chariot coming for to carry me home. Swing low, sweet chariot, coming for to carry me home.' While one group sings those words, another group sings 'Swing low' over and over while a third group sings 'Swing low sweet chariot, swing low sweet chariot' over and over. If it all sounds great together, it's called harmonizing and it's quite beautiful.
4. Next is a Hebrew song 'Zum Gali Gali'. If you're having trouble pronouncing some of the words, I have just the part for you: sing 'Zum' over and over. What is this type of singing called?

Answer: Chanting

Chanting is singing or speaking, sounds or words, rhythmically and in one or two notes. Native American Indians have been portrayed chanting while dancing around the campfires. Gregorian monks are famous for their chanting. 'Hechalutz le maan avoda, avoda le maan hechalutz. Ha shalom le maan ha amin, ha amin le maan ha shalom.' While part of the group sings these words, others sing 'Zum gali gali, zum gali, gali' and a third group just sings 'Zum' over and over.
5. Happy Hippo from the movie 'The Lion King' sings 'The Lion Sleeps Tonight'. At the beginning, people (and hippos) sing 'Wee-ee-ee-e-he-he-ee-ee-ee-e-ee-um-um-buway'. What is this type of singing called?

Answer: Yodeling

Most people, when they think of yodeling (if they ever do), usually think of girls with braids in the Alps but the beginning of 'The Lion Sleeps Tonight' is yodeling too. After the yodeling, then the singers repeat 'A-wimoweh-a-wimoweh, a-wimoweh-a-wimoweh, a-wimoweh-a-wimoweh, a-wimoweh-a-wimoweh' a couple of times and what have we learned about repeating the same words over and over - it's called chanting.
6. What kind of song is this; 'Angels we have heard on high, sweetly singing over the plains, and the mountains in reply, echoing their joyous strains, Gloria in excelsis deo, Gloria in excelsis deo'?

Answer: Carol

'Angels We Have Heard On High' is a Christmas carol. There are other types of carols but Christmas is when they are heard the most. Originally, people would dance around in a circle while singing so carols were songs to dance to. In more modern times we picture singers - carolers - going from house to house and singing to the people that live there.
7. The campfire is beginning to die down and someone starts singing 'Amazing grace! How sweet the sound that saved a wretch like me'. What kind of song is everyone joining in to sing?

Answer: Hymn

'Amazing Grace' is a hymn. A hymn doesn't have to be religious but it should be a song of praise. The song should be sung to God or some important person. Hymns are a very old form of music. In the days when the Egyptians were building pyramids, they sang hymns to their gods.
8. If your group is singing 'We are climbing Jacob's ladder, soldiers of the cross' without any accompaniment (guitar, banjo, harmonica, etc), what style singing is that?

Answer: A cappella

A cappella means singing without instrumental accompaniment. It can be one person or a whole group of singers and it can be any type of music but once was reserved for church music. 'Jacob's Ladder' just happens to be religious music and very easy to sing without instruments.
9. In the distance you hear 'My Wild Irish Rose'. The singers approach the campfire, surround your group and finish their performance on one knee. Is there a special name for this type of singing?

Answer: Yes

'My wild Irish Rose, the sweetest flower that grows. You may search everywhere, but none can compare with my wild Irish Rose. My wild Irish Rose, the dearest flower that grows, and some day for my sake, she may let me take the bloom from my wild Irish Rose.' You've just been serenaded.

When a person or group is greeted with a little light music, it can be called a serenade. Romeo may have serenaded Juliet on her balcony. The fraternity brothers serenade the sorority sisters at college. The Boy Scouts came to the Girl Scouts' fire and entertained them, a serenade.
10. As the fire burns out, everyone sings 'All my trials Lord, soon be over. Hush little baby, don't you cry. You know your mama was born to die.' What is this folk song based on, a song to end the night?

Answer: Lullaby

'All My Trials' is a folk song based on a lullaby. A lullaby is a soft, soothing song sung to put a person to sleep. This is also considered a spiritual song. It was made popular by Peter, Paul and Mary and recorded by many individuals and groups in the 50's and 60's.

My list of campfire songs is much longer, as is the list of types of songs and music but it's time to say goodnight and live to sing another day.
