Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Why would you want to hang something black over your bee hive? (The colour is a clue.)

Answer: to let your bees know about a death in your family

Apparently there is a strong bond between bees and their keepers, and if you fail to do this, your bees will leave the hive and not produce any more honey for you.
There are many other superstitions surrounding bees, the most interesting one being that bees will attack adulterers, while a woman who is untouched by man may walk among them without being stung.
2. What does it mean if you see a bat flying into the side of a building?

Answer: that rain is on the way

Conversely, if you see bats playing around in the early evening, it's a sign of upcoming good weather. It is also believed by some that a bat flying three times around a house is an omen that there will be a death in the house.
3. Being bitten by what animal, often characterized as being sly, is considered to be very unlucky?

Answer: a fox

Apparently if you are bitten by a fox, you won't live for more than seven years. However seeing a fox is considered by some to be lucky, but not if there's more than one. Scottish farmers have been known to nail a fox's head above the doors of their barns. This was believed to scare away witches.
4. It is considered to be lucky if a rabbit crosses in front of you, but it has to be moving from left to right.

Answer: True

Of course if it's moving from right to left, then it's unlucky. Another variation on this superstition has good luck coming your way if the rabbit passes in front of you, but bad luck if it crosses behind you.
5. What can you prepare for if a butterfly is found inside your house? (The flowers you'll need might even be as beautiful as the butterfly.)

Answer: a wedding

You will have a lucky year if the first butterfly you see is white. However, if the first one you see is brown you will have an unlucky year. Three butterflies seen flitting about together is considered a bad omen, and seeing a butterfly at night is thought to be a sign of death.
6. Any superstitious dairy farmer will tell you that when it's time to remove a calf from its mother, you need to walk it backwards out of the barn. This will prevent the cow from mourning the loss of her baby.

Answer: True

And while we're on the subject of cattle, remember to feed mistletoe to the first calf born each year. This will bring good fortune to your whole herd.
7. What event is said to be foretold by a bird tapping on your window?

Answer: death

Other superstitions say that it has to be a white bird to be the messenger of death. It is also said to be lucky if a bird's droppings land on your car. I think it means that you park too close to pigeons.
8. There are many superstitions about cats, but the one that I find the most amusing involves a cat jumping over a corpse. What is this supposed to do to the corpse? (think garlic)

Answer: the person will become a vampire

Black cats have been the cause of many superstitious beliefs, some say they're lucky, and some say they're unlucky. I have owned numerous black cats over the years (or should I say that they've deigned to live with me?) and all I can say with any conviction is that they're beautiful. Also amusing is the superstition that cats will suck the breath out of babies.
9. Howling dogs have been long thought to announce approaching death, but if a black poodle appears on the grave of a clergyman, does this mean that the clergyman had remained faithful to his vows?

Answer: No

The black poodle's appearance is a sure sign that the clergyman had been unfaithful to his vows in life.
There are almost as many superstitions surrounding dogs as there are around cats. One that is particularly fun is the belief that if your baby is licked by a dog, he or she will be a fast healer in life.
10. Will seeing a donkey while pregnant bring you a silly child?

Answer: No

Seeing a donkey while pregnant will bring a mother a wise, well-behaved child. And if you're ever lucky enough to see a dead donkey, make sure you jump over its carcass three times, because this will bring you all kinds of luck.
