Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which one of the following character's likes pizza?

Answer: Which one of the following characters likes pizza?

Don't put an apostrophe in 'characters' - characters is a plural word and you don't need it!

The verb like does not get an apostrophe when you conjugate it.
2. Who sold Ashleys violin?

Answer: Who sold Ashley's violin?

Ashley owns the violin, so you need an apostrophe to show possession.
3. It's the worlds best ice cream!

Answer: It's the world's best ice cream!

World should have an apostrophe, otherwise it would mean in all the *many* worlds, but you'd still need an apostrophe then to show ownership!

The word it's means it is. Its is a word that means something that belongs to it.
4. I didnt eat that.

Answer: I didn't eat that.

Didn't is a contraction of did and not. To show that it is a contraction, you need an apostrophe where the 'o' would have been.
5. Its my dog!

Answer: It's my dog!

Its= third-person possessive. It's= contraction of it and is.
6. Janes brother, Tom, likes pizza.

Answer: Jane's brother, Tom, likes pizza.

It is her brother, so she needs that apostrophe!

The conjugations of the verb like are: I like, you like, he/she likes, we like, you like, they like.
7. The dog ate it's food.

Answer: The dog ate its food.

Here's a hint: whenever you use 'it's', read through the sentence and replace 'it is' for it's. If it sounds correct, use 'it's'. If it doesn't sound correct, use 'its.'

You would never says its' to talk about something belonging to more than one 'it' because then you would have to use the word their (possession).
8. Your not a nice person!

Answer: You're not a nice person!

Your is a possessive word, you're is the contraction of 'you' and 'are'.
9. Where are you goin?

Answer: Where are you going? & Where are you goin'?

You can use either of the accepted answers. 'goin' can be used to show how the person spoke the word, in this case, leaving the 'g' off. But, if you are writing something formal, you need the 'g'!
10. Youre dog ate my sock.

Answer: Your dog ate my sock.

First: whenever you write 'youre', you need the apostrophe when because it's a contraction. Second: Because you're is a contraction, 'You are dog ate my sock' doesn't sound right, so you should use 'your' to denote ownership of the dog.
