Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Mosquito repellents don't repel bugs away, but actually hide you. The spray blocks the mosquito's sensors so they don't know you're there.

Answer: True

According to Rumor Mill and the Mayo Clinic, insect repellents block the receptors on the mosquitoes' antennae! How cool is that?
2. Which animal has a certain tissue that is the fastest growing on the planet?

Answer: moose

The moose's antler tissue only takes an average of four months to grow to its desirable length! Another interesting fact about Alaska, home to many moose, is that it is the largest per capita consumer of ice cream! Even in the cold, ice cream is still desirable!
3. How long after birth, does it take for a porcupine's quills to harden?

Answer: About 30 minutes

A porcupine's quills are actually soft when born and only take a half an hour to harden. Alaskan natives are actually known to eat porcupines as a treat!
4. What can the liquid inside young coconuts be used as a substitute for?

Answer: Blood Plasma

This tidbit of news was actually used during World War II when blood supplies were low. The fluid from young coconuts actually comes from the liquid endosperm which eventually becomes absorbed into the flesh of mature coconuts.
5. Which planet is the only one that rotates clockwise?

Answer: Venus

The following is from Bill Arnett's "Nine Planets":

"Venus' rotation is somewhat unusual in that it is both very slow (243 Earth days per Venus day, slightly longer than Venus' year) and retrograde. In addition, the periods of Venus' rotation and of its orbit are synchronized such that it always presents the same face toward Earth when the two planets are at their closest approach. Whether this is a resonance effect or merely a coincidence is not known."
6. Pageant models often smear what on their teeth before a show?

Answer: Vaseline

This is to ensure that the models' teeth won't stick when smiling!
7. What did Steven Watts, author of "The Magic Kingdom: Walt Disney and the American Way of Life", claim Walt Disney was afraid of?

Answer: Mice

In Steven Watts' book, Watts claimed that Walt Disney was in fact scared of mice but thought of them as "sympathetic." There doesn't seem to be much corroboration of this, though.
8. Vinegar can dissolve pearls

Answer: True

Many stores such as J.C. Penny offer on their websites, warnings against exposing pearls to vinegar. This disintegration is possible because the acetic acid present in vinegar is neutralized by the calcium carbonate found in pearls.
9. It is equally possible to lead a cow upstairs and downstairs, on a normally steep stair.

Answer: False

A 1998 book called "The Complete Cow" was quoted on saying that "It is possible to lead a cow upstairs but not downstairs, because a cow's knees cannot bend properly to walk back down." Some cows can if necessary go down a short flight of stairs, but it is much harder than going up.
10. Some scientific studies show that owning cats is good for health issues such as what?

Answer: High Blood Pressure

Stroking a cat can actually help to relieve stress and lower your blood pressure. The feeling of a purring cat on your lap also helps creates a sense of comfort and security.
11. William Jefferson Clinton was the first president whose name contains all the letters in the word "criminal".

Answer: False

It was actually Richard Millhouse Nixon. William Jefferson Clinton was the second.
12. If need be, turtles can obtain varying amounts of oxygen through their rear vent.

Answer: true

Turtles have a single rear vent that is called a cloaca which can allow a turtle, such as the Fitzroy River turtle, to receive as much as 2/3 of its oxygen from this route.
13. George W. Bush is not related to whom of the following?

Answer: He is related to all of the following.

George W. Bush and John Kerry are ninth cousins twice removed while both men are related through lineage, to Franklin D. Roosevelt. Both Kerry and Bush are ninth cousins of Hugh Hefner, the founder of Playboy.
14. What is Barbie's full name?

Answer: Barbara Millicent Roberts

Barbara Millicent Roberts was named after Mattel co-founder Ruth Handler's daughter. The name is also a registered trademark.
15. The word 'PEZ' (from PEZ dispensers) came from the German word meaning what?

Answer: Peppermint

The German word for Peppermint is actually 'pfefferminz' with PEZ coming from the first, middle, and last letters. (PfeffErminZ) PEZ dispensers include the likes of Hello Kitty, Simba, Timon, and Pumbaa ("The Lion King") and characters from new movies such as "Cars" and "Meet the Robinsons".
