Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which very famous song contains this monologue: "Darkness falls across the land, the midnight hour is close at hand..."?

Answer: Thriller

These words are spoken by the inimitable voice of Vincent Price in Michael Jackson's song "Thriller". Initially a character actor, Vincent soon became famous for his horror roles, particularly "The Fall of the House of Usher", "The Pit and the Pendulum", and my favourite, "Theatre of Blood".
2. What is a proper term for a fear of the dark?

Answer: All of these

These are all recognised terms for pathological fears of the dark - darkness (scoto), night (nycto) and twilight (lygo). Achluophobia is a word that means fear of darkness.
3. Which British heavy metal band gave us the song "Fear of the Dark"?

Answer: Iron Maiden

"Fear of the Dark" is the title of an album and single from 1992 by Iron Maiden; the album went to number one in the UK charts. Iron Maiden is influenced in their song lyrics by science fiction and horror, from H.P. Lovecraft to Edgar Allen Poe and even by Samuel Taylor Coleridge's "Rime of the Ancient Mariner", which is a 13-minute long track.
4. It is often heard in movies and TV shows that someone has "gone dark"; what does that mean?

Answer: Out of communication

The phrase is used primarily in the intelligence communities and the military. It refers to radio silence or being out of communication and unable to be contacted.
5. The Darknet is a private portion of the internet that uses peer-to-peer networking for file sharing amongst "friends". What would one normally associate with this?

Answer: Criminal activity and political dissidence

Like the "underground press" of the '60s and '70s, a whole counterculture has developed where people are effectively "off the grid" and free to share what they like. Often a person would need a particular piece of software to be able to access it.
6. Batman is referred to as the Dark Knight. He has been portrayed onscreen by several actors. Which one comes next in the sequence: Michael Keaton, Val Kilmer, George Clooney, Christian Bale, ___?

Answer: Ben Affleck

Of course, Adam West was the classic TV series Batman. Heath Ledger played the Joker in "The Dark Knight" film, and Nicolas Cage was actually slated to play The Scarecrow in an earlier film. Cage was also an option for Superman (I kid you not). Ben Affleck is the incarnation of Batman after Christian Bale.
7. Dark matter and dark energy are estimated to make up what percentage of the universe?

Answer: 95.1%

You can't see dark matter or dark energy; you can only say it exists because of its influence on other things. Still, that's a big percentage! We probably need a few more particle physicists.
8. If someone was being "kept in the dark" about something, how would you help them?

Answer: Explain the situation

If you are "kept in the dark", you are not fully appraised of the situation. You are uninformed or ignorant of what is occurring. Of course, if important persons are "kept in the dark" on certain matters they have complete deniability.
9. What is a dark horse?

Answer: A person with unknown skills or abilities

Originating in the field of horse racing, the phrase refers to anyone about which very little is known. For example, it could refer to a new employee or a new entrant into a sporting competition.
10. What caused the so-called "Dark Ages" of history?

Answer: Decline of the Roman Empire

As the Roman Empire declined, there was a gradual deterioration across Western Europe in culture. This lasted between five to seven centuries (depending on how it is perceived).
