Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which day of the week is the "last name" of Ruby, the day of Mitch Albom's weekly date with Morrie, and has a child that is "full of grace"?

Answer: Tuesday

"Ruby Tuesday" is a classic Rolling Stones song that has been covered extensively since its creation. Mitch Albom wrote a memoir named "Tuesdays with Morrie" about his weekly visits to a dying mentor. And, in the nursery rhyme "Monday's Child," children born on various weekdays are described, with Tuesday's child being described as "full of grace".
2. Which last name combines stars from "The Daily Show" and "Twilight", and a singer who sang "Do Ya Think I'm Sexy" and "Forever Young"?

Answer: Stewart

Jon Stewart was for many years the acclaimed host of the comic news show "The Daily Show" that has won several Emmys for Outstanding Variety, Musical, or Comedy, program. Kristen Stewart played Bella Swan, protagonist of the "Twilight" saga, in the movies. Finally, Rod Stewart is the singer who performed the songs "Do Ya Think I'm Sexy," "Forever Young," and more - including a cover for "Ruby Tuesday," the song from Question One!
3. Which three letters bring to mind a type of sleep, the band that sang "The End of the World As We Know It", and the "Death Note" character Light uses as the most effective weapon against his enemy?

Answer: REM

While all of these three-letter acronyms/combinations are bands (R.E.M., Electric Light Orchestra, Trans Siberian Orchestra, and E.M.F.), only REM refers to a type of sleep - rapid eye movement, when dreaming occurs - and a character from manga/anime "Death Note", a god of death named Rem.
4. Arthur Miller wrote about a view from here, while Robert Waller wrote about the ones in Madison County, and the Red Hot Chili Peppers sang a major song about being under it. What structures are these?

Answer: Bridge(s)

Arthur Miller wrote a tragic play called "A View From the Bridge" about Italian immigrants. Robert Waller wrote a novel called "The Bridges of Madison County" about melancholic family secrets. Lastly, the Red Hot Chili Peppers' arguably biggest hit is "Under the Bridge", a slow ballad about overcoming drug addiction.
5. T.S. Eliot wrote about men with this quality, Shakespeare's Richard II laments that the crown has this quality, and a certain type of especially dangerous bullets partially have this quality. Which quality is this?

Answer: Hollow

T.S. Eliot wrote a harrowing poem called "The Hollow Men", which is rich with literary references and oft-quoted itself. In "Richard II", Shakespeare has his title king refer to "the hollow crown which rounds the mortal temples of a king" during his elegy on his own regality. And hollow-point bullets are known for their lethality, owed to the fact that they'll burst apart upon impact.
6. Which word is the last name of the politician nicknamed "The Kingfish", the descriptor for the "Day's Journey Into Night" that Eugene O'Neill wrote about, and the common descriptor for George Kennan's famous Telegram?

Answer: Long

Huey Long was a populist/socialist governor and senator from Louisiana who was known as "The Kingfish" in the 1930s. Eugene O'Neill wrote "Long Day's Journey Into Night", a tragic play about the Tyrone family's struggles with addiction and long-past secrets. Finally, the post-WWII early-Cold-War discussion included George Kennan's (an embassy official's) Long Telegram, a missive about the Soviet threat to the West and how to deal with it.
7. What is the last name of three different fictional characters - Lord Eddard of Westeros, Willie of "All the King's Men", and Tony of "Avengers" fame?

Answer: Stark

Eddard Stark is a central figure of the first book of the "A Song of Ice and Fire", the George R. R. Martin series set in Westeros. Willie Stark is the central figure of "All the King's Men", an American Southern political epic based on the rise and fall of Huey Long. Tony Stark is "Iron Man", a major superhero of "The Avengers".
8. What regal title brings to mind Leonardo DiCaprio's victorious declaration from "Titanic", Michael Jackson's status in the pop world, and the prolific horror writer behind "The Shining", "Misery", "The Shawshank Redemption", and more?

Answer: King

In "Titanic", Leonardo DiCaprio's character declares "I'm King of the World!" Michael Jackson was widely regarded as "The King of Pop", and Stephen King is the major prolific horror writer responsible for the novels behind the well-regarded films of "The Shining", "Misery", and "The Shawshank Redemption". He has written many, many more as well.
9. Fantine of "Les Miserables" musical fame said that these creatures come at night, while Survivor sang about the "Eye of" one, and Pi had to meet with one rather whimsically named Richard Parker. Which creatures are these?

Answer: Tigers

Fantine's solo in "Les Miserables", "I Dreamed a Dream", contains the lyric "and the tigers come at night", a metaphor for the life that has continually let her down and made her struggle. Survivor is the band who created the "Rocky 3" anthem, "Eye of the Tiger", an aggressively upbeat and inspirational number. Pi of the novel and film "The Life of Pi" finds himself stranded on a boat with a tiger on the open sea.
10. When you hear about the fifth of November, the Maine, and the Alamo, what action do you feel inspired to undertake?

Answer: Remember

"Remember, remember, the fifth of November" is a line from an old nursery rhyme about the Guy Fawkes Gunpowder plot, which took place on November 5th. "Remember the Maine" was a rallying cry concerning the mysteriously lost ship "The Maine", which was exploded and sank off Cuba, killing many of its crew and providing an excuse for the US to enter the Spanish-American War at the end of the 19th century. "Remember the Alamo" was a rallying cry for the Mexican-American war, after the catastrophic loss at the Alamo, the Texan soldiers apparently took that to heart in their intensity of executing the rest of the war effort.
