Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In Greek mythology, what is the name of the Titan who was punished by Zeus for introducing fire to humankind?

Answer: Prometheus

After the Titanomachy, the Olympians jailed the Titans in Tartarus, but Prometheus and his brother Epimetheus were spared that fate and were given the task to create man. Prometheus built man out of mud and Athena breathed life into him. When time came to endow man with all the necessary qualities such as fur, strength, speed, cunning, wings, claws, Epimetheus had already given them all to the various earthly creatures and there was nothing left for man. So, Prometheus gave him two properties that only the gods had, to walk standing up and the fire to protect and feed himself. Zeus became furious because of Prometheus' deceit and punished him by chaining him to Mount Caucasus where an eagle came twice a day and ate his liver which regenerated by the following morning. Prometheus' torment lasted until Heracles killed the eagle and freed him.
2. In the powerful 1991 movie "Backdraft", Brian (William Baldwin), as a young child, witnesses his firefighter father's death in a fire and is later shown on an award-winning photograph, on the cover of a magazine, holding an item that belonged to his father. What item was it?

Answer: Helmet

Directed by Ron Howard, the movie has actors Kurt Russell, William Baldwin and Robert De Niro in the leading roles and impressive fire scenes and stunts. It tells the story of two estranged brothers who have lost their firefighter father in a fire and, years later, join forces in the investigation of a series of fires by an arsonist.
The term "backdraft" is used when a fire suddenly becomes explosive when air (oxygen) is reintroduced into a depleted of oxygen environment.
3. 'A'A, Pahoehoe, Pele's tears and Pele's hair are terms used in Hawaii, in the context of which natural phenomenon?

Answer: Volcanic activity

'A'A, Pahoehoe, Pele's tears and Pele's hair are types of lava flow that occur in the Hawaiian islands during a volcanic eruption.
'A'A occurs when the lava erupts suddenly and with great speed and force. When it cools off, it forms a rough, jagged, clinkerous surface of medium to great thickness.
Pahoehoe occurs when the lava oozes more than it flows, at a very low speed and it forms a smooth, ropy surface, often thought to resemble the surface of a pan of brownies.
Pele's tears are small, bead-like volcanic particles and Pele's hair is thin, strand-like lava flow, formed usually from molten basaltic glass.
Even though the names are Hawaiian, these types of lava flows can occur in other parts of the world.
4. Which of the following major religions absolutely forbids cremation of the dead?

Answer: Islam

Muslims believe that when a person dies the body must be treated in the same way as the living, with dignity and respect. The body of a deceased must be washed (ghusi), shrouded in white (kafan), prayed for (salat al-janazah) and put in the earth in a grave marked with a small stone without decorations, where it should be visited by family and friends. Fire destroys and mutilates the body, therefore, according to the divine law (sharia), cremation of the dead is forbidden (haram).
5. Which of these words means an extreme phobia of fire?

Answer: Pyrophobia

The word "pyrophobia" derives from the Greek words "pyr+phobos", "fire+fear" and it means the morbid fear of fire. It is one of the oldest and most common phobias and it is manifested by various levels of fear, sometimes even of smoke, candles or matches.

This irrational fear produces the typical symptoms of panic attacks, trembling, nausea, tachycardia, sweating, shortness of breath and dry mouth. In the rare cases when an individual is unable to follow his daily routine because of this, pyrophobia can be treated with a combination of medication and therapy.
6. During the summer of 2007, a lethal combination of extreme temperatures, strong winds and arsonists resulted in massive forest fires which started in June and lasted until September throughout Greece. Which archaeological site of ancient games was partly damaged by the fires?

Answer: Olympia

Those devastating fires claimed the lives of 84 people, among them several firefighters, 60,000 livestock, 2,700 square km of forest, 4,5 million olive trees, more than 2,000 houses and other buildings and most part of the Parnitha National Park, the closest National Park to the capital Athens, with its unique flora and fauna.
The fire approached Olympia and the archaeological site in August and, with great effort, it did not damage the museum or the artifacts; the fire stopped at its courtyard and the building was scorched. The surrounding wooded area was burned to the ground, including the Kronion Hill, the ancient grove dedicated to Cronus, Zeus' father.
Extensive reforestation has taken place on the site, in an effort to restore its natural beauty.
7. The wife of writer F. Scott Fitzgerald was killed in a fire in Highland Hospital in Ashville, North Carolina. What was her first name?

Answer: Zelda

Zelda Fitzgerald was diagnosed with schizophrenia in 1930 and until the end of her life she committed herself, on and off, to various mental institutions. In 1948, she was in Highland Hospital, allegedly, sedated and locked in a quiet room, awaiting electroshock treatment the following morning.

A fire broke out in the kitchen of the establishment and quickly spread to the wooden building through the dumbwaiter shaft. She died along with seven other people and was buried with her husband in Rockville, Maryland.
8. Legend has it that Roman Emperor Nero fiddled while Rome burned. Was Rome actually ravaged by a fire during Nero's reign?

Answer: Yes

A great fire destroyed 70% of the city of Rome in July of 64 A.D., leaving the most part of its population homeless. Nero, however, did not play the fiddle while the fire was destroying his city. Firstly, the fiddle and all the similar stringed musical instruments did not exist until the 11th century. Secondly, Nero wasn't even in Rome on the day of the fire.

He was at his villa in Antium, about 50 km south of Rome, and only returned to Rome after the fire broke to organize relief measures. Even though the act itself never took place, the expression "to fiddle while Rome is burning" is still used today when someone dwells on trivial and meaningless things while something of importance takes place.
9. According to ancient tragedian Aeschylus, the fall of which great Homeric city, on the shores of Asia Minor, was transmitted all the way across the Aegean Sea to Mycenae by the use of the ancient Greek system of fire communication called "phryctoria"?

Answer: Troy

This ancient method of fire communication used a system of two sets of five torches each, set up on a hill or high ground. The tower posts were built about 20 miles apart and when a message needed to be sent a keeper (phryctoros) would light the torches in a code, based on what letters were needed to be used for the message. The keeper at the next post would pick up the message and send it to the next tower and so on. This way the system took advantage of the mountainous terrain of the Greek islands and mainland and it conveyed messages to great distances. The system was used up to the 1850s and after it became obsolete, lighthouses were built on many posts of the phryctorias.
For those with an interest in geography, Aeschylus, in his work "Agamemnon" mentions the posts of the phryctorias that were used to transport the fall of Troy to Mycenae.
From Troy the message went to Mount Ida, some 20 km southeast of Troy, from there to the island Lemnos, from Lemnos to the Holy Mountain Athos, from Athos to Mountain Makistos on Euboea and from there to Mountain Arachnaios, on the shores of Argolida. Mycenae is situated a few kilometers west of the foot of the mountain.
10. The title of my quiz, "Set Fire To The Rain", is a favorite song by a young charismatic singer who burst into the music scene in 2008, with an album called "19". What is her name?

English singer and songwriter "Adele" Laurie Blue Adkins (b. 1988), recorded her first album "19", just two years after graduating from the BRIT School for Performing Arts and it became a big success almost immediately. Number "19" was her age at the time.
