Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This actor stars as "Johnny Smith" in the 1983 movie "The Dead Zone", based upon the Stephen King book.

Answer: Christopher Walken

Long before the USA network series premiered, Christopher Walken had the lead role as a man who emerged from a coma, discovering that he was very in tune with his sixth sense.
2. What do you call precipitation that falls from clouds in drops that are greater than .5 mm in diameter, when the weather is above 32 degrees Fahrenheit? (Not hail)

Answer: rain

If the drops are smaller than that, it is considered "drizzle". Not all types of clouds produce rain. Two examples of clouds that do are nimbostratus and cumulus clouds.
3. Dick Clark was the original host of "AMERICAN BANDSTAND"?

Answer: False

The original host of "American Bandstand" was Bob Horn and aired in 1952 as a local Philadelphia TV show. Dick Clark took over in 1956 and it aired on ABC the following year. It was considered quite a gamble as "rock and roll" music was considered by many to be "dreadful" and even "evil".

The final show with Dick Clark was in 1987, but a new host took over named David Hirsch. This was displayed on the USA network and only lasted 2 more years.
4. The first champions of the Arena Football League were "The Denver Dynamite". A team whose nickname was "The Drive" was in 5 of the next 5 Arena Bowls. What city did they play in?

Answer: Detroit

Arena Football was born in 1987 and Tim Marcum coached "the Drive" to 3 titles in the first 6 years. He was also the coach of the "Denver Dynamite" for their Arena Bowl victory in "Arena Bowl I" He then coached the "Tampa Bay Storm" and also won titles with them (1995 and 1996). The "Detroit Drive" went defunct in 1993.
5. "Downward dog" and "Upward dog" are two positions that you are likely to hear in which of the following exercise routines, followed by "Namaste"?

Answer: Yoga

Downward and upward dog are two of the most recognized yoga poses. There are several different kinds of yoga, but these two poses are almost universal. "Namaste" is a Sanskrit word thats meaning can be interpreted slightly differently, but its basic definition is "I bow to the divine in you." It comes from the teachings of Krishna.

It can be a greeting in which you are paying respect to whomever you are talking to and is usually spoken with one's hands pressed together over their heart.
6. Tom Selleck left a talk show upset after he felt that he was grilled about his NRA beliefs. Who was the host of this show?

Answer: Rosie O'Donnell

In an episode of the Rosie O'Donnell show, Tom Selleck appeared as a guest, in part to promote his new movie. Rosie had made it very known that she was against the use of guns in this country as she publically reported statistics of how many children are killed by guns each year. Rosie is the founder of the "For All Kids Foundation". Tom Selleck was a supporter of the NRA and the interview seemed to go awry as it became a heated argument between them. Whether or not this was completely spontaneous remains in doubt because there are rumors that this was discussed between Tom and Rosie before the show.
7. What character did George Lazenby play in the film, "On Her Majesty's Secret Service?"

Answer: James Bond

The character of "James Bond" (007) brings to mind either Sean Connery or Roger Moore, for most people. In more recent years, Timothy Dalton and Pierce Bronson have also starred as "James Bond." However, in 1969, the producers of this film could not get Sean Connery and found an Australian model named George Lazenby to fill the role.

This was right in the middle of Sean Connery's success as "Bond", but the film still did surprisingly well. However, the critics were pretty tough on George Lazenby and it remained his sole "Bond" performance as 007. Sean Connery picked back up where he left off in the 1971 film, "Diamonds Are Forever".
8. On Saturday Night Live, in its early years, John Belushi did a comedy sketch as "Pete Dionasopolis", the owner of the Olympia restaurant, which had a very limited menu. The only item to eat was a cheeseburger. What was the only thing that you could order to drink?

Answer: Pepsi

"Pete Dionasopolis" was a Greek immigrant that ran the Olympia diner. No matter what anyone ordered, such as a pastrami on rye with a coke, Belushi's response would be "No pastrami, no coke... only cheeseburger, Pepsi". He would often get extremely animated and yell "Cheeseburger, cheeseburger, cheeseburger, Pepsi, Pepsi, Pepsi".
9. There is a very popular urban legend that Walt Disney is preserved in a cryonic chamber and will remain frozen until medical technology can make his re-animation possible. Is Walt Disney FROZEN?

Answer: No

Walt Disney died on November 16, 1966 after his circulatory system collapsed. He had been hospitalized on and off since November 2, 1966. Worldwide speculation was that Walt Disney was active in cryogenics research and was stored away somewhere in a deep-freeze chamber.

However, several organs were removed from Walt Disney after his death for microscopy studies and the surgeons have stated that they could never be put back where they belonged. His daughter, Diane wrote this in 1972: "There is absolutely no truth to the rumor that my father, Walt Disney, wished to be frozen. I doubt that my father had ever heard of cryonics." While nothing is completely proven, it seems that Walt Disney was cremated.

The urban legend remains a legend and Walt Disney is not frozen. (Quote provided by Snopes.com)

She also starred as a yoga instructor in "The Next Best Thing". 6)ROSIE O'DONNELL is a close friend of Madonna and were seen in public together several times after starring in "A League of Their Own" together with Tom Hanks. 7)JAMES BOND is the main character in the movie "Tomorrow Never Dies" in which Madonna sings the title song, "Die Another Day". 8)PEPSI was an advertiser that was funding Madonna's campaign that yanked her commercial off of the air after "Like a Prayer" came out.

The controversy surrounding it included religion and interracial dating. 9)FROZEN is another Madonna song that can be found on her "Ray of Light" album. I hope you enjoyed my first common bond quiz!
