Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. 'MISS YOU', 'ANGIE', so 'LET'S SPEND THE NIGHT TOGETHER'. Name the group.

Answer: The Rolling Stones

All these songs by 'The Rolling Stones' were top ten hits in the British hit singles chart. 'Miss You' (June 1978), 'Angie' (September 1973) and 'Let's Spend The Night Together' (January 1967). 'Angie' was my favourite song of 'The Rolling Stones' which featured on their 'Goat's Head Soup' album.
2. Which word can follow sword, gold, flying, and cat?

Answer: Fish

Swordfish, goldfish, flying fish and catfish. Flying fish skim above the surface of the water, using their large pectoral fins, and leap out of the water to escape predators.
3. Which television programme had its hotel name plate changed to 'Watery Fowls', 'Fatty Owls', and 'Farty Towels'?

Answer: Fawlty Towers

'Fawlty Towers' was a situation comedy set in Torquay, England. John Cleese played the part of Basil Fawlty, who dominated the show, by patronizing his hotel guests. Manuel (Andrew Sachs) was an incompetent Spanish waiter, who was often manhandled by Basil, out of sheer frustration. Sybil Fawlty (Prunella Scales) played Basil's nagging wife, who loved chatting to her friend Audrey on the phone, and criticizing Basil's lack of professionalism at running a hotel. The cast of Monty Python supposedly visited 'The Gleneagles Hotel', run by a rude hotelier, called Donald Sinclair.

He allegedly threw Eric Idle's briefcase out of the hotel, thinking it might contain a bomb. This irrational behaviour had all the ingredients for a Basil Fawlty creation.
4. Which Disney 'musical fantasy' included Angela Lansbury, David Tomlinson and Roddy McDowall?

Answer: Bedknobs and Broomsticks

Angela Lansbury played the character of Eglantine Price, who is an amateur witch, in 'Bedknobs and Broomsticks' (1971). Three children called Paul, Carrie, and Charlie were sent to live with her, in a place of safety, during the Blitz. With the help of witchcraft they enjoyed a magical journey to see a memorable animal soccer match and an underwater adventure.

This supported the movie to win an Oscar for best visual effects. David Tomlinson played Emelius Browne, who accompanied Eglantine in this delightful Disney movie, which was partly animated. Roddy McDowall played a clergyman called Mr Jelk.
5. 'Dear Fatty' was a book by Dawn French. Who was fatty a reference to?

Answer: Jennifer Saunders

'Dear Fatty' was a series of letters, written by Dawn French, to different people. This became her best-selling autobiography. Fatty, apparently is the affectionate nickname she had for Jennifer Saunders, her comedy partner in the television programme, 'French and Saunders'.
6. El Prat airport serves which Spanish seaport. (Character Manuel, from 'Fawlty Towers', may use it.)

Answer: Barcelona

Barcelona is a port of Catalonia, in northeast Spain, on the Mediterranean Sea. It is associated with Catalonian nationalism, being the final city to concede to Franco, in 1939. It has many Art Nouveau buildings, including the famous Sagrada Familia church, designed by Antonio Gaudi.
The character 'Manuel', in 'Fawlty Towers', understood very little English as he was from Barcelona and "knew nathing".
7. Which red-nosed, American comedian, used pseudonyms of 'Mahatma Kane Jeeves', 'Primrose Magoo', and 'Charles Bogle'?

Answer: W. C. Fields

W.C. Fields was an American movie actor born William Claude Dukenfield (1879-1946). His nom de plume of 'Mahatma Kane Jeeves' seemed like a clever play on words for 'my hat and cane Jeeves'. He was free of all prejudices, hating everybody equally. He referred to an elderly woman who was dressed in fancy clothing, as somebody all done up like a well-kept grave.

He was well known for his dislike of children, small dogs, and Christmas, so it was ironic he died on Christmas Day, in 1946.
8. Who said, "People use to laugh when I said I wanted to be a comedian. They're not laughing now"?

Answer: Bob Monkhouse

Bob Monkhouse was a talented entertainer who was born, 1st June, 1928, in Beckenham, Kent, England. He came from a privileged background as his father was a chartered accountant. As a master of one-liners he was excellent at putting contestants at ease as presenter of 'The Golden Shot', 'Celebrity Squares' and 'Wipeout'.

He was an avid collector of vintage movies and a talented cartoonist. He featured in the first 'Carry On' movie, 'Carry On Sergeant' (1958), as the character of Charlie Sage. He was awarded an OBE in 1993, and wrote an autobiography called 'Crying with Laughter'. Alas, he died from prostate cancer, 29th December, 2003.
9. Whose autobiography was called, 'Ooh! What a Lovely Pair'?

Answer: Ant and Dec

Anthony McPartlin (Ant) and Declan Donnelly (Dec) appeared on the children's drama, 'Byker Grove', shown on BBC1 (1989-2006). Ant played the part of Peter Jenkins, 'PJ', and Dec played 'Duncan'. This was a springboard to launch their vocal career. Their first top ten single hit was called 'Let's Get Ready To Rhumble' which reached the dizzy heights of No 9 in the British hit singles chart. Dizzy heights was appropriate as it was nauseous, but they got the recognition they deserved. Ant and Dec became very popular television presenters and were natural at presenting 'I'm A Celebrity - Get Me Out Of Here'! and 'Britain's Got Talent'.
10. Whose autobiography is called 'Working With Children and Animals'? (Clue: Clarissa 'Clancy' Merrick)

Answer: Liza Goddard

Liza Goddard played Clarissa 'Clancy' Merrick in the Australian, children's programme of 'Skippy, the Bush Kangaroo'. This was shown on ITV (1967-69). She has been married three times. Her first husband was Colin Baker who played the sixth 'Dr Who' in the television series.

Her second husband was pop star, Alvin Stardust, whose first two British hits were 'My Coo-Ca-Choo' and 'Jealous Mind'. Finally she married David Cobham who is a wildlife filmmaker and was the producer and director of the movie, 'Tarka the Otter' (1979).

This was adapted from a book by Henry Williamson, and Peter Ustinov narrated this family movie, about the daily life of an otter. Hope you learnt something new.
