Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of these elements' symbols does NOT spell the word "sin"?

Answer: Silicon, Indium

Sulphur = S, Indium = In
SIn.

Sulphur = S, Iodine = I, Nitrogen = N
SIN.

Silicon = Si, Nitrogen = N
SiN.

Silicon = Si, Indium = In
SiIn.
So Silicon and Indium do NOT spell the word "sin".
2. What word do the chemical symbols for "tungsten + arsenic + hydrogen" make?

Answer: wash

Tungsten = W, arsenic = As, and hydrogen = H. Together this is WAsH.
3. Which of these elements' chemical symbols create the word "bite"?

Answer: Both of them

Boron = B, Iodine = I, Tellurium = Te. Together this is BITe.

Bismuth = Bi, Tellurium = Te. Together this is BiTe.

Both combinations make the word "bite".
4. The chemical symbols from the elements chlorine, arsenic and hydrogen (in this order) form what word?

Answer: clash

Chlorine = Cl, Arsenic = As, Hydrogen = H. Together this forms ClAsH.
5. Which of these numbers' alphabetic names CANNOT be created through elements' chemical symbols?

Answer: Seven

Tellurium = Te, Nitrogen = N (TeN).

Nickel = Ni, Neon = Ne (NiNe).

Oxygen = O, Neon = Ne (ONe).

You cannot create the number seven through elements' chemical symbols. There is not an element with the symbol "En" or even an element with an "E" symbol.

Selenium = Se
Vanadium = V
Neon = N

"SeVN" is just about as close as you can get to the word "seven".
6. Sulphur + tellurium + phosphorus' chemical symbols make up the word ___.

Answer: step

Sulphur = S, Tellurium = Te, Phosphorus = P. Together these form STeP.
7. It would be hard to find an English word beginning with which of these elements' chemical symbols?

Answer: Mercury

Astantine = At. There are plenty of words beginning with "at" - attention, attempt, ate, etc.

Americium = Am. There are quite a few words beginning with "am": amazing, amulet, amass are just a few of them.

Praseodymium = Pr. It is not too hard to find words beginning with "pr" - protein, progress and present all begin with "pr".

Mercury = Hg. There is no word in the English language beginning with "hg", although there are a few words containing "hg" - "beachgoer", "flashgun" and "churchgoer" are all valid words.
8. The chemical symbols from phosphorus, arsenic, and sulphur (in that order) spell what word?

Answer: pass

Phosphorus = P, Arsenic = As, Sulphur = S. Together they form PAsS.
9. Iron, Nitrogen, ___, Erbium. Which element's chemical symbol goes in the blank to complete the word "fencer"? (Alternatively, which of the following elements is correctly matched up to its chemical symbol?)

Answer: Carbon (c)

Iron = Fe, Nitrogen = N, Erbium = Er. That spells FeNER, so we need a "C" between nitrogen and erbium. Carbon has the symbol of "C".

Caesium actually has the symbol "Cs", the symbol for nickel is "Ni" and erbium's symbol is "Es".
10. Three of these elements' symbols make up the word "pine". Which one doesn't fit?

Answer: Iridium

Phosphorus = P, Iodine = I, Neon = Ne. Together they form PINe.

Iridium = Ir. "Ir" is not contained in the word "pine", so iridium is the odd one out.
