Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. During Germany's Nazi regime who was Chief of the Abwehr (1935 to 1944)?

Answer: Wilhelm Canaris

Wilhelm Canaris is considered the mystery man of the Nazi Regime under Hitler. On the one hand a great protector of the German opposition to Hitler and on the other hand he prepared all the major expansion plans for the acts and crimes of Hitler. He was a very interesting man who deserves greater respect for his part in World War II.

4. Adelaide, the capital of the Australian state, South Australia, is located on which peninsula?

Answer: Fleurieu

Yorke Peninsula and Eyre Peninsula are also located in South Australia, but to the west of Adelaide. Adelaide is located on the much smaller Fleurieu Peninsula Spencer does not exist, but Spencer's Gulf is the body of water that separates Yorke Peninsula and Eyre Peninsula. Gulf St Vincent separates Fleurieu and Yorke Peninsulas.
5. Which of these four operas is not part of Wagner's "Der Ring des Nibelungen"?

Answer: Tristan und Isolde

All four are great operas, which I highly recommend. Richard Wagner's work inspired a lot of people in the movie industry, including Cecil B. DeMille and George Lucas.
6. Who wrote the novel "When Eight Bells Toll"?

Answer: Alistair MacLean

MacLean is one of my favourite authors. He has the ability to tell a ripping yarn in a short concise manner.
7. In which country would you most likely eat "echanko nabe"?

Answer: Japan

Chanko nabe is a stew-like assortment of vegetables, meat, and seafood cooked in one huge pot and is, in large quantities, the primary source of energy for sumo wrestlers. One of the best places to eat this tasty dish is in Ryoogoku, an area in Tokyo where there are many sumo stables.
8. As of May 2003, of which country is Jose Manuel Durao Barroso the Prime Minister?

Answer: Portugal

Jose Manuel Durao Barroso became Prime Minister of Portugal in April 2002. He leads a centre-right coalition government between his party, the PSD (Social Democrats) and the conservative PP (People's Party).
9. As of May 2003, Nicky Oppenheimer is the chairman of which of the following mining companies?

Answer: De Beers Group

Nicky Oppenheimer is the latest member of the Oppenheimer dynasty to lead the world's largest diamond company from their base in South Africa. He is also a director of Anglo American, a company his grandfather founded after World War I.
10. Which of these four famous actors did not appear in the 1978 movie "Boys from Brazil"?

Answer: Roger Moore

I really enjoyed this fun movie, which was full of interesting twists and turns. Gregory Peck was excellent in his portrayal of the infamous doctor, Josef Mengele. Roger Moore, ex-Bond and Simon Templar, it seems, was not good enough to make the long list of excellent actors in this movie.
11. Which great African leader was assassinated in January 1961 on the orders of US President, Ike Eisenhower?

Answer: Patrice Lumumba

Patrice Lumumba was a man of great intelligence, and a great patriot of his country. Unfortunately (for him) he upset his friends in the US with his speech-making abilities and his perceived Soviet Union support.
12. Which tennis player has won the most Grand Slam events in the twentieth century? (Includes singles, doubles and mixed doubles)

Answer: Margaret Smith Court

Court Smith won 62 titles, including singles, mixed and doubles. Billie Jean King has won more Wimbledon titles than anyone else. Pete Sampras has won the most men singles titles and Rod Laver completed the Grand Slam (all four majors in one year) twice (1962 and 1969).
13. What are the only two non-extinct monotremes in the world?

Answer: Echidna and Platypus

There are only two living monotremes, the duck-billed platypus and two species of echidna; both of them are found only in Australia and New Guinea.
14. In what country would I be, if I was sipping a glass of shiraz in the city of Shiraz?

Answer: Iran

Shiraz, the city is the provincial capital of Fars. It is believed Shiraz, the red wine and grape originated in Persia where the Shiraz carpet marks the site of its origin. Shiraz carpets, along with Isphahan are some of the most beautiful carpets in the world. This is also in the same area as Mt Ararat where the Ark is supposed to have landed.
15. Who had a hit with the 1980 song "Turning Japanese"?

Answer: The Vapors

"Turning Japanese" was the band's second single released. It was a huge hit all over the world, particularly in Australia, where it went number one for a number of weeks. In the States, "Turning Japanese" was deciphered as a paean to masturbation. No further comments are needed.
16. What is the title of the second book in Colleen McCullough's "Masters of Rome" series?

Answer: The Grass Crown

This is the best series I have ever read. It is full of historical facts written in an easy to read format (for me). The series starts with "First Man in Rome" where Gaius Marius and Sulla are introduced to the readers. The series ends with "The October Horse" and the death of Gaius Julius Caesar.
17. The Won is the currency of which country?

Answer: South Korea

Remember, if going from South Korea to Japan, change your Won to Yen in Korea. It is much more difficult to do so once you are in Japan.
18. As of May 2003, of which South American country is Jorge Fernando Quiroga Ramirez the President?

Answer: Bolivia

President Jorge Fernando QUIROGA Ramirez (elected vice president in 1997) succeeded former President Hugo BANZER Suárez in August 2001 after Banzer stepped down for health reasons.
19. Which actor played the character "Barin" in the 1980 movie "Flash Gordon"?

Answer: Timothy Dalton

This was pretty easy if you have seen the movie! Sam Jones was Flash, Brian Blessed was Vulcan and Max was good old Ming. I have to say this is one of the best films of all time, with a great soundtrack.
20. Which of these languages is considered a Romance language?

Answer: Romanian

Romanian along with the other big four, French, Italian, Spanish and Portuguese make up the Romance Languages. Hungarian also called Magyar, traditionally belongs to the Ob-Ugric languages (eg Khanty and Mansi) of the Finno-Ugric branch of Uralic. The Bulgarian language is the earliest written Slavonic language. It belongs to the southern branch of the Slavonic languages. Greek is Greek!
