On May 11, 1953 the tornado killed 114 people and destroyed much of downtown Waco. However, the Suspension Bridge (built in 1870) held fast.

Answer: The ALICO Building

The ALICO (Amicable Life Insurance) Building stands 22 stories high and, when it was completed in 1911, was the tallest building west of the Mississippi. The building was one of the few structures that remained relatively unscathed during the tornado of '53.
