Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Here is a delectable dish: What do you call bacon grease, cold beef, water and crumbled cornbread?

Answer: Cush or slosh

This delicious treat was known as cush or slosh. Believe it or not, this was considered a treat and luxury as the war went on.
2. As a Confederate soldier, what type of meat were you most likely going to be served?

Answer: Pork

In the Army of Northern Virginia as well as the other armies of the Confederacy, you were most likely going to be served salted pork for your ration. Hopefully, it won't be too moldy or wormy.
3. What did the soldiers call 'greybacks'?

Answer: Lice

The common soldiers called the vermin that infested their clothes and bodies greybacks. With no way to replenish worn clothing, lice thrived in army camps.
4. If you were feelin' a mite peeked, what would the surgeon prescribe for you?

Answer: Whisky

The cure all remedy for all manner of sickness was a shot of medicinal alcohol. This was usually always whisky. Drinking was frowned upon in Jackson's Corps, but tolerated because nothing could dissuade the men from drinking.
5. How was venereal disease treated in camp?

Answer: An injection of ink

If the unfortunate offender was to admit to contracting a case of the pox, he was given an injection ink. I have no idea where this 'cure' came from or where this injection was given.
6. Which camp 'servant' was usually a 'camp follower'?

Answer: The laundress

The camp servant that was usually a camp follower was more than likely a laundress that did no laundry. The 'laundresses' always managed to show up around pay call.
7. When did most of the gambling take place in an army camp?

Answer: On pay day

The most gambling took place on paydays when the men had money. Oddly enough, the 'laundresses' and sutlers always showed up as well.
8. In a Confederate Army camp, what two instruments were you most likely going to hear while the men were relaxing?

Answer: The violin and banjo

The two most popular instruments were the violin (fiddle) and the banjo. The drum and fife were too martial and hence not preferred.
9. When no chaplain or minister was available, how did the men conduct religious services?

Answer: A layman conducted them

Whenever no chaplain or minister was available, a layman was called upon to conduct services. As tawdry and bawdy as an army camp could be, most of te men still held on to their faith.
10. If an outsider was to visit an army camp, what was he advised to bring with him?

Answer: A revolver

If by chance you were to visit an army camp, bringing a weapon was not a bad idea - preferably a revolver or a shotgun. Drunkeness, swearing and fighting and all manner of miscreant behaviour could be taking place.
