Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. By tradition, what year marks the beginning of the Roman Monarchy?

Answer: 753 B.C.

Romulus and Remus argued about who would be the first king of their new city and who should name it. When Romulus cut the new city in half, Remus crossed the boundary therefore defying the gods, so Romulus was justified in killing Remus and named Rome after himself. (This of course is a matter of mythology, not history).
2. Lucius Tarquinius Priscus was one of three kings of what ethnic background?

Answer: Etruscan

On his way to Rome, an eagle took his hat off of his head and then put it back on his head. His wife said this was a sign that he was destined for glory. I guess she was right.
3. According to legend, Tullus Hostilius died performing a sacred rite to which god?

Answer: Jupiter

Jupiter struck Tullus' palace with a lightning bolt and Tullus burned to death because he had made an error during the rite.
4. According to mythology, the nymph Egeria was the wife of what peaceful king?

Answer: Numa Pompilius

When Numa died, Egeria cried and cried until Diana turned her into a sacred spring, so she could cry for the rest of eternity.
5. Which of the following is not an accomplishment credited to Tarquinius Superbus?

Answer: A calendar according to the cycle of the moon

Numa actually created the calendar.
6. The Rape of the Sabines occurred during the reign of what king?

Answer: Romulus

Rome was populated by men and the only way they could increase the population was to trick the Sabines into going to Rome and then taking the women.
7. How did Servius Tullius' reign come to an end?

Answer: He was taken from the Senate and murdered in the streets.

Servius' own daughter Tullia was on of the conspirators against him. When he was killed, she drove over his body with her chariot staining her wheels and clothes with blood.
8. Who was Romulus and Remus' mother?

Answer: Rhea Silvia

Rhea Silvia was thrown into the Tiber along with Romulus and Remus for having children as a Vestal Virgin. Luckily, Rhea was rescued by the river god and taken as his wife.
9. What is the (family) name of the man known as "The Liberator" of Rome, who finally established the Roman Republic?

Answer: Brutus

Brutus pretended to be a half-wit so Tarquinius Superbus would not think he was capable of overthrowing him. Tarquinius at that time was killing all opposition and people he saw as challengers to the throne including relatives.
10. What year marked the end of the Roman Monarchy?

Answer: 509 B.C.

The Roman citizens were finally fed up with the tyranny of the kings and decided to set up a Republic with two consuls who shared equal power so no one could become too powerful.
