The USS Arizona was a Pennsylvania class battleship. She was sunk at Pearl Harbor.

The Fletcher class destroyers were the best and most numerous destroyer class in the US navy.

The Iowa class battleships included the USS Iowa, the USS New Jersey, the USS Wisconsin and the USS Missouri, where the Japanese surrender document was signed.

4. The main submarine class for the US

Answer: Gato class

The Gato class submarines were the main submarines for the US navy in WW2 and they were also one of the largest in the war. The size of a Gato submarine was twice that of a German U-boat. It was all fine except the long amount of time it took to dive (around 2 minutes). They also carried faulty torpedoes.

The USS Barb was a Gato class submarine and was the most successful. Not a single crewman on board the Barb was ever killed or wounded. It sank over 50 Japanese ships and even one train!

The Montana was designed to be the best battleship of its time but war ended before it could be built. After the war there was no need for the battleship any more because air power could easily sink a battleship, so the Montana was never built.

The USS Ward was a Wickes class destroyer and it fired the first American shot in World War 2. It was on patrol outside Pearl Harbor when it spotted a Japanese midget sub following the USS Antares trying to sneak into the base. The first shot from the Ward just narrowly missed the conning tower but the second shot hit the sub, probably killing the commander. Ward then released several depth charges and the submarine disappeared. USS Ward was herself sunk in the Battle of Leyte Gulf.

Answer: USS Reuben James

USS Reuben James was a post World War 1, four funnel Clemson class destroyer. She was sunk by the German submarine U-552 by a torpedo meant for a merchant ship. She sank immediately.

USS Indianapolis was a Portland class heavy cruiser. It delivered parts of the atom bomb to Tinian and was sunk by a Japanese submarine on the way back. The survivors of the ship were repeatedly attacked by sharks in their wait for rescue.
