The surrender took place on the Battleship Missouri. Curtis was on the USS Proteus (AS-19) about a mile away. He was also wounded at Guam.

at the time and got more than he bargained for. Ironically, he was rejected by the navy in WW1 because of poor eyesight.

He rescued 70 marines under fire in the fiercest battle in US Marine history. It was the first attempted landing and many mistakes were made which helped improve later landings in the Pacific. He retired as a lieutenant and was awarded the Bronze Star for his bravery at Tarawa.

He joined the Army Air Corps and made training films for pilots. He was discharged as a major. He is also the only president to be a Union member. He headed the Actors' Guild. He was a loyal Democrat until after the war when he supported Eisenhower and then Nixon.
