1. The origins of the humble doughnut are a little hazy as they are for many dishes but the ring doughnut was apparently first created by Hanson Gregory, the son of Elizibeth Gregory who had made the deep fried cakes for Hansen and his crew to be stored on their long voyages. What year was this?

Answer: 1847

There are several accounts for the 'hole' being made, one is that in the midst of a storm the doughnut was caught on the spoke of the ship's wheel, others say that he was trying to save costs on food and there are other theories.
Apparently the food was hailed as a brilliant creation and the rest is history.
2. In 1900 the first printed use of 'Donut' was in a book by George W.Peck, what was the book?

Answer: Peck's Bad Boy and his Pa

The quote is 'Pa said he guessed he hadn't got much appetite, and he would just drink a cup of coffee and eat a donut'.

George Wilbur Peck was a writer, newspaper editor, politician and statesman. He was born 28th September 1840 in Henderson, Jefferson County, New York.
3. In this European country, their version of a doughnut is called a Krapfen. They are solid and filled with apricot jam or vanilla cream. The country is landlocked and the Krapfen is most popular during Carnival season (Fasching). Where is this?

Answer: Austria

Krapfen are usually made from a sweet yeast dough fried in fat or oil and topped with powdered, icing or conventional sugar. Some other fillings they come with include chocolate, mocha, custard, jam, marmalade, or they can have no filling whatsoever. Mmmm, mocha.
4. "Time to make the Donuts" was an advertising slogan for Dunkin' Donuts, but what year did it first appear on television screens?

Answer: 1981

Fred the Baker was the star of Dunkin' Donuts' "It's Worth the Trip" campaign which featured the slogan "Time to make the donuts". The campaign was well received and was classed as one of the five best commercials from the 80s by the Television Bureau of Advertising. Michael Vale played Fred the Baker for more than 15 years until his retirement in 1997.
5. A glazed, twisted, rope shape doughnut can be known as:

Answer: Yum-Yum

Personally the first time I came across a Yum-Yum was in Greggs which is a bakery chain based in the UK. There is also a chain based of doughnut shops which is based in California called Yum-Yum Donuts.
6. Where would you find a traditional Smultring?

American donuts are also available along with the Berliner which has its founding in Germany and Central Europe. You would think this would be called the same in Berlin, but nope, they call their version Pfannkuchen (literal translation is Pancake).

Answer: 1920

It was created by a man called Adolph Levitt in New York City.
8. A fairly famous man who works at a nuclear reactor has a special fondness for Donuts, he isn't really fussy, he isn't really real, but he does love those donuts! Who is he?

Answer: Homer Simpson

There had to be one really easy question surely, and although it's not documented I would say he has been a major contributor to popularising Donuts for the masses, mmmmm donuts.

(No really, that's not true, but it could be?)
9. Although its beginnings were in the USA, which continent has replaced America as Dunkin' Donuts largest market in the early 2000s?

Answer: Asia

In 1956, Mister Donut was founded, providing pastries, coffee, donuts and more. Today it is known as Dunkin' Donuts in the US but maintains a strong presence across Asia, in Japan, China, Thailand etc.
In Thailand it is known for its concept "Donut for Fun".
10. National Doughnut Day (USA) started in 1938, what was the original cause?

Answer: The Salvation Army

The day was originally created in deference to the women who served doughnuts to soldiers during World War I.
