Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What three characters can symbolize the e4 e5 opening in the ECO system?

Answer: C20

The move e5 is supposed to challenge the opponent for control of the center squares. All games beginning in e4-e5 are part of the C category in ECO.
2. What does 5/3 Fischer mean?

Answer: 5 minutes per player, add 3 seconds after each move

There are not many chess clocks made this way. 5/3 Fischer is usually used in computer games.
3. What is the opening h4 called?

Answer: Deprez Opening

The Deprez opening is considered one of the worst first moves possible, because it moves one of the three main castling pawns, it weakens g3 and g4, and it does not control any center squares.
4. What is the opening h3 called?

Answer: Clemenz

The Clemenz Opening is used as a waste of time, so that white can play as black, and black can play as white.

6. What is black's usual response to the Grob Opening?

Answer: d5

The Grob Opening (g4) is usually answered with d5 because it attacks the g4 pawn while developing the queen pawn.
7. What type of tournament is Round Robin?

Answer: Everyone plays everyone

Round Robin tournaments usually have 6 people.
8. What is the opening a4 called?

Answer: Ware Opening

The Ware Opening is not as bad as the Deprez, because white usually castles kingside.
9. What is the Jung Attack?

Answer: no such thing

1. g3 e6 is not a real opening, 1. d3 e5 is the Mieses Opening, and 1. c3 b6 is not a real opening either.

After 1. f4, From's Gambit is e5, Positional Variation is Nf6, and Sicilian Variation is c5.

12. What annotation is used when somebody does a dubious or unorthodox move?

Answer: ?!

?! moves are not bad blunders, but just bad moves that weaken the position and give the player less of a chance of winning. ?? moves are super bad blunders that lose the game, or large amounts of material.
13. Which of these is not a gambit?

Answer: Robles

The Evans gambit was a favorite of Adolf Anderssen's.
14. Which pawn is sometimes sacrificed early by black against the Danvers opening?

Answer: e pawn

The Danvers opening 1. e4 e5 2. Qh5 is considered a weak play by white. The two most common black replies are 2... Nc6 and 2... Qe7, but black can also ignore the queen and focus on development, often gaining several tempos after 3. Qxe5 by making moves that attack the exposed white queen. 2... Nf6 is the most interesting of these gambit moves.
15. With Descriptive Notation, what is used when indicating check?

Answer: ch

In Algebraic Notation, + is check and # is checkmate. Some people use ++ as checkmate, but ++ is usually used to indicate double-check.
