Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. There are seven Weirds in the Magic: the Gathering blocks of "Ravnica" and "Return to Ravnica". They are all creatures. They are always two colors in some way. Which two colors are Weirds?

Answer: Blue and red

Three of the Weirds have both a red mana symbol and a blue mana symbol in their mana cost, while three have a hybrid red/blue symbol. One is just blue, but spending red mana on it has an additional effect.
2. Four Weirds in Magic: the Gathering have a phrase on them that is part of the text of a triggered ability. What is that?

Answer: Whenever you cast an instant or sorcery spell

Only one of the three originally created Weirds had this phrase, but of the four that were created years afterwards, three of them had the phrase.

Each of the four with this phrase has a different second half. Three of them have their own card name in it. Here they are:

Whenever you cast an instant or sorcery spell, Blistercoil Weird gets +1/+1 until end of turn. Untap it.
Whenever you cast an instant or sorcery spell, you may switch Fluxcharger's power and toughness until end of turn.
Whenever you cast an instant or sorcery spell, you may untap Gelectrode.
Whenever you cast an instant or sorcery spell from your library, copy it. You may choose new targets for the copy.
3. In which Magic: the Gathering set were the first three Weirds made?

Answer: Guildpact

The Weirds in Guildpact are Steamcore Weird, Petrahydrox, and Gelectrode. The name of the last one is a portmanteau of "gel" and "electrode". Steamcore Weird and Gelectrode were reprinted in Duel Decks: Izzet vs. Golgari.
4. Which of these statements is true for all of the seven Weirds in Magic: the Gathering in the "Ravnica" block and the "Return to Ravnica" block?

Answer: Their power is less than or equal to their toughness

Their power is less than (in 5 cases) or equal to (in 2 cases) their toughness. However, three of the Weirds have abilities that change their own power and toughness.

There is one rare Weird, and it is the only one that has a second creature type. It is a Weird Wizard.
One weird (Gelectrode) has 0 power, but it can tap to deal damage.
5. There is one legendary Weird in the game of Magic: the Gathering. It has a converted mana cost of 6, and it allows you to cast spells from the top of your library. What is its name?

Answer: Melek, Izzet Paragon

While all four of these are legendary creatures are from the Izzet guild, only "Melek, Izzet Paragon" is a Weird. It is actually a Weird Wizard. Both "Niv-Mizzet" creatures are a Dragon Wizard, and "Tibor and Lumia" is a Human Wizard. These are all Izzet legendary creatures, and they are all a wizard in addition to being something else.
6. In which of these Magic: the Gathering sets were there NO weirds?

Answer: Gatecrash

Return to Ravnica had 5 of the 10 guilds, while Gatecrash had the other 5. Since Return to Ravnica had the Izzet guild, the Izzet guild could not appear in Gatecrash, and therefore Gatecrash had no Weirds. Dragon's Maze had all 10 guilds.

Duel Decks: Ajani vs. Nicol Bolas and Duel Decks: Izzet vs. Golgari are the other two sets that had at least one Weird in them. Duel Decks often have cards that are reprinted from a variety of sets.
7. One Magic: the Gathering card, Thunderheads, is not a Weird itself, but it is an instant spell that creates Weirds. The number created depends on how many times you pay the spell's replicate cost. The Weird tokens created are 3/3 with flying, and they only last for one turn. However, what other ability do the Weirds have?

Answer: Defender

These Weirds are not meant to attack - they are meant to block attacking creatures. Since Thunderheads is an instant, it can be cast after the opponent has declared attackers. The flavor text of Thunderheads is a pun on the word "grew": "The clouds grew thick, and then they grew teeth."
8. Which of these is the name of a Weird in Magic: the Gathering? It has a converted mana cost of 2, and it has 1 power and 4 toughness originally, although its power and toughness can be changed using its activated ability.

Answer: Frostburn Weird

Its activated ability costs 1 red or blue mana, and activating it gives Frostburn Weird +1/-1 until end of turn, increasing its power but decreasing its toughness. It can be activated multiple times.
9. In Magic: the Gathering, which was the first Weird to have text that says "When (name of card) becomes the target of a spell or ability, return (name of card) to its owner's hand."?

Answer: Petrahydrox

Petrahydrox can be cast using 4 mana, one of which is either red or blue. It has 3 power and 3 toughness, and the ability "When Petrahydrox becomes the target of a spell or ability, return Petrahydrox to its owner's hand." The flavor text of Petrahydrox is "It departs through the streets' fissures with a sound like gravel pouring into a pond."
10. What is the only keyword ability on any Weird creature card in Magic: the Gathering in the "Ravnica" block or the "Return to Ravnica" block?

Answer: Flying

Fluxcharger has flying. All seven Weirds (including Fluxcharger) have at least one ability that is not a keyword.

Trample would not fit red or blue. Replicate and Retrace are abilities on instant and sorcery spells, not creature spells.
