Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. I have decided that I want some tiramisu, a wonderful dessert from which of these countries?

Answer: Italy

Tiramisu is a decadent Italian dessert that consists of ladyfingers that have been dipped in coffee. They are layered with a mixture of whipped egg yolks and mascarpone (a rich cream), cocoa, and various liqueurs. Often cinnamon is sprinkled on top. This dessert has many variations, and is wonderful with a cup of Italian espresso.
2. Australia and New Zealand both claim to be the home of a wonderful dessert called Pavlova which was named in honor of which of the following choices?

Answer: Russian ballerina

Australia and New Zealand are home to a wonderful meringue based dessert named Pavlova after the Russian prima ballerina Anna Pavlova. This delicious dessert is a meringue cake with a whipped cream topping and often includes slices of fruit on top. It is light in texture but rich in taste. If you ever have the chance to try this unique dessert, I encourage you to try it.

Its light texture simply melts in your mouth.
3. Roz bil-Laban is a delicious variation of rice pudding that would be served in a restaurant that specializes in what type of cuisine?

Answer: Egyptian

This yummy desert would be offered at most restaurants that specialize in Egyptian cuisine. Variations of rice pudding can be found in cultures from around the world. You might wish to indulge in some hot karkade, a type of Egyptian hibiscus tea, with your Roz bil-Laban for wonderful Egyptian treat.
4. Which country would I need to visit if I wanted to enjoy a clootie dumpling along with some Drambuie?

Answer: Scotland

A clootie dumpling is a traditional Scottish dessert pudding. It is made with flour, breadcrumbs, dried fruit, suet, and of course, sugar and spice. Some milk is added as a binder and the mixed until a dough forms. The dough is then wrapped up in a well-floured cloth and set into a large pan of boiling water.

After simmering for about 2 hours, it is removed and set to dry in front of an oven or fire place. It is often served with a small jug of custard to pour over top. Serve with a glass of Drambuie, a Scottish liqueur made with honey, malt whiskey and spices, and I start thinking of taking a trip to the highlands of Scotland to feast on some other traditional dishes.
5. Once in a while, I indulge in some matcha ice cream, which is very popular in the far east and gets its unusual flavor from which of the following?

Answer: Green Tea

Matcha or green tea ice cream is very popular in Japan and other south-east Asian countries. It has the green color of pistachio ice cream and is served the same way all ice creams can be served. It is so popular that both Haagen-Dazs and Baskin-Robbins have added it to their line-up. Don't knock it until you've tried it.
6. One of these things is not like the others, can you guess which one?

Answer: Cremello

Cremello is term used to describe a horse coloring where the animal has a white mane and tail as well as white skin and fur. The other three options are custard desserts that have a topping of either soft or hard caramel. Variations of caramel custard desserts are found globally and may be where the term "nectar of the Gods" is derived. (just kidding!)
7. German chocolate cake is actually a Haitian specialty that is usually served with buttermilk and honey.

Answer: False

While German chocolate cake did not originate in Germany, it also did not arise in Haiti. The cake, with its yummy coconut pecan icing, can be traced to the year 1852 when and American named Sam German developed a brand of dark baking chocolate for the American Baker's Chocolate Company.

The company honored him by naming the product Baker's German's Sweet Chocolate. It was not until 1957 when a Dallas, Texas, homemaker sent in her recipe for a "German Chocolate Cake" to a local newspaper using this product by name, that an American legend was born.

When eaten with a glass of ice cold milk, it provides numerous vitamins and minerals... I'm sure of it... I just cannot find anything, anywhere to back up that final statement.
8. A Rönttönen is a tradition Finnish dessert that consists of an open faced pie filled with a combination of loganberries and what other common food?

Answer: Mashed potatoes

Rönttönen is an open-faced pie that is filled with a mixture of mashed potatoes and loganberries. The crust is made of barley and rye. While the combination may sound a little unusual, the end result is wonderful, especially if you like things that are tart in flavor. It is usually served with hot Finnish coffee.
9. What is the name of one of my very favorite desserts which was declared the "Official Pie of the State of Florida" in 2006?

Answer: Key lime pie

Key lime pie originated in the state of Florida and may not be for everyone. It derives its name from the Key limes, which grow in the Florida Keys, that are used in the recipe. While sweet and rich, it is definitely tart as the main ingredients are lime juice, sweetened condensed milk and egg yolks.

The recipe makes use of the left over egg whites to make a meringue topping for the pie. So if you are ever in Florida and someone offers you a piece of Key lime pie and a glass of southern-style sweet tea, try it, I think you'll find it truly unique.
10. What is the main flavor of the French dessert Crêpes Suzette?

Answer: Orange

Crêpes Suzette is a dessert that everyone should try at least once. They consist of crêpes with a sauce of sugar orange juice, and orange Curaçao liqueur poured over top. The dessert is served flambé style at the diner's table. This dessert is so decadent that adding small bottle of Perrier bubbling water or a small glass of champagne will make you have a dessert experience of a life-time.
