Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. First things first, who founded Sears Roebuck and Co.?

Answer: Richard W. Sears

Richard Sears was selling watches by mail order in 1886. He soon found it necessary to hire a watch repairman to better service his customers. He found his man in young tinkerer Alvah Roebuck.
2. P. 186. Band Instrument Dept. Marceau valve trombones "Have that deep rich tone so peculiar to trombones." What feature usually associated with trombones is missing on this instrument?

Answer: slide

This type of trombone used finger valves to change the notes instead of a slide. The E flat version in brass cost $9.75. Opt for the nickel finish and the price skyrockets to $11.25.
3. P. 278. Firearms Dept. What unique type of "Belgian" weapon was offered for sale at a list price of $14.76?

Answer: Combination shotgun and rifle

The Belgian Combined Rifle "Is a gun equal to what retail gun shops value at $25.00 to $30.00." I suppose these came in handy if you went hunting for rabbits and met up with a bear!
4. What item, list price $1.00, consisted of a rubber hose with a stem at one end and a conical cup on the other, and helped people who were hard of hearing?

Answer: conversation tube

"Undoubtedly the best device ever made for the relief of deafness..." For a small extra charge, the Conversation Tube could be ordered with a covering for the rubber tube in mohair or silk.
5. P. 562. Stenography Dept. "$22.95 buys a $100.00..." What?

The Burnett Visible Typewriter could be sold at this "bargain" price because Sears had contracted the factory's entire output.
6. P. 1023. A seven inch celluloid hair comb was a bargain at only .07 cents (80 cents per dozen). What was celluloid?

Answer: a type of plastic

Celluloid was the marvel material of its day. It was used to make a myriad of products like movie film, costume jewelry, picture frames, dinner plates and hundreds of other items.
7. P. 720. The Acme Regal steel cooking range(list price $25.07) had a design feature that would hardly pass muster in today's appliance market. What was it?

Answer: it was lined with asbestos

"This stove is asbestos lined throughout. Asbestos, being fireproof and a nonconductor controls the heat and adds greatly to the life of the stove."
8. P. 313. Need these items for that Olympic tournament you qualified for? They retail for $1.05 and 75 cents respectively. Swordsmanship lessons extra.

Answer: fencing mask and glove

The mask was "...made of the finest quality wire with extra small mesh." The glove was made for right or left hands, fashioned from buckskin and sported a jaunty red gauntlet.
9. P. 864. Menswear. These items come attached to modern day men's shirts but in 1909 they were sold separately. What are they?

Answer: collars

Men's collars: .10 cents each. Boys' collars: .08 cents each. Collars came in linen or, if you wanted something waterproof, rubber or celluloid.
10. P. 100. Kitchen Utensil Dept. What was the somewhat contradictory ad pitch made for Alaska Silverware? Remember, you get what you pay for!
