Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Many exercises are designed to increase muscle toning and strength, and many of the names of major muscles have been abbreviated in gyms around the world. Which of these muscles would be closest to the ground, when you are standing up?

Answer: Quads

The quadriceps femoris (quads) are the large muscles in the top half of your leg, and connect your knee to your hip. The trapezius (traps) is the large muscle at the back of your neck, extending down to your mid-back. The latissimus dorsi (lats) are near the lats and operate your shoulder, and your gluteus maximus is what you are sitting on- it is the large muscle in your buttocks.
2. Exercise is encouraged for everyone from young to old age but in the work place there are systems in place to ensure that workers do not over exercise. What is the problem they are trying to stop?

Answer: RSI/OOS

Repetitive Strain Injury or Occupational Overuse Syndrome comes from a person doing the same movement over and over but there are other primary risk factors involved such as poor posture, poor technique, and overuse. Systems are now in place to ensure that this does not happen such as appropriate breaks, changes in duties and exercises to undertake.
3. Adolphe Quetelet devised a method to assess the appropriate weight for a person of a certain height. What system did he come up with?

Answer: BMI

The idea behind Body Mass Index was to work out what the height of a person is and what their weight should be. BMI equals weight over height which gives a range of weight depending on a number of things including age, sex and bone structure.
4. What portable exercise machine, invented in the 1960s by Gert F. Kolbel, was designed for strength training?

Answer: Bullworker

The Bullworker was a simple device, basically a couple of metal tubes with a powerful spring inside, but it is a very effective exercise aid.

Lap/sash is a type of car seatbelt. A medicine ball is a large, heavy ball and has its roots in ancient Persia. A treadmill is a walking/running machine and the source of many laughs on funny video shows.
5. Jump rope/skipping rope is good cardiovascular exercise. Vigorous skipping for 15-20 minutes will burn off how many calories?

Answer: About 200 calories - a candy bar

Skipping is an excellent aerobic exercise. When the skipping is vigorous, it burns around 700 calories per hour which is the equivalent of running a five minute kilometer.
6. Aquarobics is exercise done in water, such as a swimming pool. Which of these is NOT an advantage of this type of workout?

Answer: Improved swimming ability

The water supports your body and cushions it against impact damage to ankles, knees and back. Because water is much more dense than air, muscles are required to work harder, so water-based exercise can work quicker than land-based. Unfortunately, aquarobics are not designed to affect your swimming ability.
7. Does a person participating in any type of exercise have to use a heart rate monitor?

Answer: No

One helpful measuring device for those undertaking physical exercise is the heart rate monitor, but it certainly is not mandatory (as you could also manually check your pulse). This device is used to inform the exerciser of their condition while undertaking the activity but should not be relied on totally.
8. You have decided to begin a fitness/strength training program. Which of the following steps should you take first?

Answer: Consult your doctor about an appropriate fitness/strength training regime for you

Your doctor will be able to give you appropriate advise for a fitness program as she/he will know your health history. Other factors that a medical doctor will take into account include your age, fitness level and any possible health problems
9. What part of your body would you be working on if you were doing push ups, bench presses and bar dips?

Answer: Pecs

There are many benefits of these exercises other than increasing your Pecs. Regular exercise will also benefit upper body strength, defined upper body muscles, bone strengthening, a reduction in fat and cholesterol and an increase in processing sugar.
10. Strength training is an essential fitness component of many sports. Which of the following sports does NOT need such strength training as part of their program?

Answer: Chess

Strength training is used in many sports. As well as the above mentioned sports (excluding chess), strength training is also used in sports such as javelin, soccer, rugby and American football.
