Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In music, there are many terms from the Italian to signify tempo and tone. Which of these terms could mean 'sweetly and softly'?

Answer: Dolce

'Dolce' literally means 'sweet' in Italian. Some expressions using the term include 'dolce far niente', meaning pleasant idleness and 'la dolce vita', meaning a life of luxury.
2. Leechcraft was formerly a term to signify which occupation?

Answer: Medicine

As 'witchcraft' is to witches, 'leechcraft' once was to doctors, who used leeches. From Brewer's dictionary we are told of the following etymology: 'Anglo-Saxon, læce, one who relieves pain, læcecræft.'
3. One of my favorite words is 'rumbustious'. Which of these words could be used as a synonym for this charming term?

Answer: Boisterous

A rumbustious or rumbustical person is one who is full of mischief. The word could come from a combination of the obsolete term 'robustious' and the word 'rum'. This makes sense when one considers the effects of rum on an otherwise restrained individual.
4. Which of these words refers to the art of making carvings out of whale bone, ivory, or indeed, other similar seaborn materials?

Answer: Scrimshaw

In place of the word scrimshaw the term scrimshander can be used. These terms are not to be confused with 'scrimshank', which refers to a person who avoids his/her duty or responsibility.
5. What is the term for the chemical compound in chocolate that is poisonous to dogs?

Answer: Theobromine

Theobromine is a compound very similar to caffeine in structure. When dogs eat chocolate, this is the chemical that makes them sick, so please avoid allowing your dogs to eat the stuff!
