Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of the rebels sing "Empty Chairs at Empty Tables" after the revolution has failed?

Answer: Marius

Marius Pontmercy is the young romantic lead who is loved by Éponine but is in love with Cosette. He is one of the student revolutionaries and the only one of the options who is still alive at this point of the show - all of his friends and the other students have died on the barricade. He is still recovering from his own injuries at this time and goes to the deserted ABC cafe where they all used to meet and sings this poignant song of mourning.

"There's a grief that can't be spoken
There's a pain goes on and on
Empty chairs at empty tables
Now my friends are dead and gone

Here they talked of revolution
Here it was they lit the flame
Here they sang about tomorrow
And tomorrow never came".
2. Who is dreaming of a better life when they sing "Castle on a Cloud"?

Answer: Cosette

This is sung by the young Cosette in the First Act. Eight year old Cosette is Fantine's illegitimate daughter but is being brought up by the Thénardiers in the country. She is not well treated by them, and is expected to do a lot of heavy work. She dreams of a better life where she would be held and loved.

"There is a lady all in white,
Holds me and sings a lullaby,
She's nice to see and she's soft to touch,
She says "Cosette, I love you very much."
I know a place where no one's lost,
I know a place where no one cries,
Crying at all is not allowed,
Not in my castle on a cloud."
3. "Stars" is a compelling solo sung by which of these characters?

Answer: Javert

Javert is totally devoted to the letter of law. He begins the show as a prison guard and continues throughout as a police inspector. His life's mission is to find Valjean and bring him back to justice. To him there are no shades of grey - there is only right or wrong, good or evil. He does not acknowledge that repentance is possible and Valjean's obvious acts of kindness and humanity create a dilemma in him that he cannot reconcile and which leads to his suicide later in the show.

"Stars" shows his earlier conviction of his belief in law and order and his purpose:

"Stars In your multitudes,
Scarce to be counted,
Filling the darkness,
With order and light.
You are the sentinels,
Silent and sure
Keeping watch in the night,
Keeping watch in the night
You know your place in the sky,
You hold your course and your aim,
And each in your season returns and returns
And is always the same."
4. The students and the women all sing "Drink With Me", but who has one of the leading parts?

Answer: Grantaire

Grantaire is the only student in the options provided. He is portrayed as either drinking or already drunk for the majority of the show which leads to some rather maudlin lyrics. This song is sung just after the first attack as the rebels settle down for the night at the barricade. Éponine has already been killed at this stage and although Valjean is present he does not join in with the singing.

"Drink with me
To days gone by
Can it be you fear to die?
Will the world remember you
When you fall?
Could it be your death
Means nothing at all?
Is your life just one more lie?"
5. Which of the following wanders the city streets at night singing "On My Own"?

Answer: Éponine

This is Éponine's big solo of the show. After delivering a message for Marius (whom she loves) to Cosette (the girl he loves) she is walking back alone to the barricade. She sings of how, at night by herself, she can make believe that he is beside her and that there is a way for them to be together but the song ends with her knowing that it isn't real, and the only way they can be together is in her mind.

"I love him but every day I'm learning
All my life I've only been pretending
Without me his world will go on turning
A world that's full of happiness
That I have never known
I love him, I love him, I love him
But only on my own"
6. Which of these men thinks he's the "Master of the House"?

Answer: Thénardier

Mr and Mrs Thénardier own an inn in the beginning of the musical and take money for taking care of the young Cosette. Éponine is their daughter, who is very spoilt, while Cosette is treated like a slave. Nine years later they have lost the inn and are living in poverty in Paris. They are the 'villains' of the piece, conning and cheating whomever they can for money, but the musical gives them a humorous side to provide some light relief to the storyline.

"Master of the House" is sung in Act One while they are still at the inn and has Thénardier singing of how he rips his customers off:

"Master of the house, keeper of the zoo
Ready to relieve 'em of a sou or two
Watering the wine, making up the weight
Pickin' up their knick-knacks when they can't see straight
Everybody loves a landlord
Everybody's bosom friend
I do whatever pleases
Jesus! Won't I bleed 'em in the end!"
7. "Little People" is sung by which of these diminutive characters?

Answer: Gavroche

In Victor Hugo's novel Gavroche is actually the Thénardier's eldest son, but the musical portrays Éponine as their only child and Gavroche as a homeless street urchin living by his wits. He dies at the barricade by going out to collect ammunition from the dead soldiers for the revolutionaries.

He sings "Little People" at the beginning of Act Two when he's trying to prove to the students and other street people that he can do a lot because of his size, and that they should not underestimate him. He then sings a different reprise later, proving his point and saving the students by exposing Javert when he is at the barricade pretending to be on their side.

"Good evening, dear inspector,
Lovely evening, my dear.
I know this man, my friends, his name's Inspector Javert!
So don't believe a word he says cuz none of it's true!
This only goes to show what lil' people can do!
And lil' people know when lil' people fight
We may look easy pickings but we've got some bite!
So never kick a dog, because he's just a pup
We'll fight like twenty armies and we won't give up
So ya better run for cover when the pup grows up!"
8. Who sings the famous solo "I Dreamed a Dream"?

Answer: Fantine

Fantine is the mother of Cosette, a product of an affair in her youth. She leaves Cosette in the care of the Thénardiers and promises to pay them to take care of her. After being unfairly dismissed from Valjean's factory by the foreman she ends up as a prostitute on the streets, and dies in the hospital just after Valjean has promised to take Cosette into his protection. She is also in the finale when she appears as a spirit to escort Valjean to Heaven.

She sings this song just after she has been dismissed and is contemplating how different her life is from what she had hoped it would be.

"I dreamed a dream in time gone by
When hope was high
And life worth living
I dreamed that love would never die
I dreamed that God would be forgiving
Then I was young and unafraid
And dreams were made and used and wasted
There was no ransom to be paid
No song unsung, no wine untasted
But the tigers come at night
With their voices soft as thunder
As they tear your hope apart
As they turn your dream to shame"
9. "Bring Him Home" is a desperate plea sung by whom?

Answer: Valjean

Jean Valjean is the central character in the musical. The musical begins with his release from prison and then shows his decision to turn his life around and live a virtuous life. To do this he skips out on his parole and takes on a new identity. He becomes the owner of a big factory and the Mayor of that town but is finally found by Javert. After rescuing the young Cosette he leaves for Paris and yet another identity. The show then begins ten years later.

This song is sung at the barricade where he goes to join the students after finding out that Marius and Cosette are in love. Marius is asleep after the first attack and Valjean is praying for God to save his life.

"God on high
Hear my prayer
In my need
You have always been there
He is young
He's afraid
Let him rest
Heaven blessed.
Bring him home."
10. The rousing rebellion song "Do You Hear the People Sing?" is led by which of these characters?

Answer: Enjolras

Enjolras is the leader of the Friends of the ABC, the student group who believes in the need for political change in the country. He is a charismatic figure who is looked up to by them all. He sees the death of General Lamarque, a politician who is a champion of the poor, as a sign for their revolution to begin. The uprising is not a success and he dies alongside all his comrades - with the exception of Marius who is saved by Valjean.

This song is his rousing call to arms. Combeferre, Courfeyrac and Feuilly also sing solo parts along with a chorus by the other students and cast members but Thénardier is not part of this group, Fantine is dead and Javert would never be involved in anything anti-establishment!

"Do you hear the people sing?
Singing a song of angry men?
It is the music of a people
Who will not be slaves again!
When the beating of your heart
Echoes the beating of the drums
There is a life about to start
When tomorrow comes!"
