Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. 'I'll give you all I've got, you know I can protect you.'

Answer: 'Try Not To Be Afraid' ('Whistle Down The Wind')

Swallow still thinks that the man is Jesus. He realizes his chance and tells her to bring the gun he has hidden in a train tunnel. Swallow is afraid, but he calms her. A wonderful song!
2. 'She dances naked in my soul and sleep won't come.'

Answer: 'Belle' ('Notre-Dame de Paris')

One of the best musical songs ever written (at least in my opinion). Quasimodo, Frollo and Phoebus express their feelings for Esmeralda. '... and it's no use to pray these prayers to Notre-Dame.'
3. 'If my life were important I would ask will I live or die - But I know the answers lie far from this world.'

Answer: 'Close Every Door' ('Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat')

'Close Every Door' is the only song in the musical which is really serious. Joseph sings it when he's in jail.
4. 'It's our mothers and fathers, our heroes and martyrs, for God's in the people and people are the land.'

Answer: 'God's Own Country' ('The Beautiful Game')

A wonderful song. Mary and a Protestant girl both sing separately about 'their' Ireland.
5. 'Les Miserables': Who sings the following lines: 'Lamarque is ill and fading fast, won't last the week out so they say'?

Answer: Marius ('Look Down')

Marius and Enjolras talk about the situation in Paris. They think that only General Lamarque 'speaks for the people here below', but, as Marius says, Lamarque is ill. Enjolras responds 'With all the anger in the land, how long before the Judgment Day?'
6. 'My mind is clearer now, at last, all too well, I can see where we all soon will be.'

Answer: 'Heaven On Their Minds' ('Jesus Christ Superstar')

Judas' first song, the opener of the musical, accuses Jesus of having gone too far. Judas is afraid that the Romans will not let them go on - there's 'too much heaven on their minds'.
7. 'All I have to do is pretend I never knew him.'

Answer: 'Easy As Life' ('Aida')

Elton John's and Tim Rice's musical about an Egyptian princess. It has been adapted from Verdi's opera.
8. 'Can he see or will he never guess that next time I'm gonna answer yes - What if he couldn't wait, have I left it too late?'

Answer: 'Only He' ('Starlight Express')

Pearl decides to return to Rusty. One of my favorite {songs;} unfortunately they changed it for the German version, and the new English version has quite another song ('Next Time You Fall In Love') at the place of 'Only He'. I never understood why.
9. 'The Scarlet Pimpernel': From which song is the following quote and who sings it: 'Piercing into the sky and higher and the strong will thrive, yes, the weak will cower while the fittest stay alive'?

Answer: Chauvelin ('Falcon in the Dive')

A powerful song. One of my favorites from the show (two of the others are also sung by Chauvelin - the 'evil ones' always have the best songs!). Chauvelin assures Robespierre that he will find the 'Scarlet Pimpernel' and he is quite certain to succeed.
10. 'Jekyll and Hyde': Who sings the following and from which song is it: 'Animals trapped behind bars at the zoo need to run rampant and free'?

Answer: 'Alive Reprise' (Hyde)

After having killed the bishop, Hyde sings the reprise of 'Alive' which is even more powerful than the original 'Alive'. Great song, especially when Robert Cuccioli sings it :)
