Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "But the world was sleeping, any dream will do."

Answer: Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat

This song, "Any Dream Will Do," closes the show and helps open it (it comes right after the Narrator's "Prologue" in some productions). Joseph sings it at the beginning, and the Narrator sings it with him at the end.
2. "I dreamed a dream in times gone by."

Answer: Les Miserables

This is from "I Dreamed a Dream," one of the most well-known theater songs. It's sung by Fantine, a young girl whose lover abandoned her and left her with their child. Fantine then becomes a prostitute to support her daughter.
3. "To dream the impossible dream, to fight the unbeatable foe."

Answer: Man of La Mancha

I think this song, "The Impossible Dream," is one of the most beautiful songs in all musical theater history. It's sung by an old man who thinks he is a knight, and goes around the countryside as Don Quixote de la Mancha, rescuing imaginary maidens and fighting imaginary giants. When a bar maid asks him why he does all these things, he sings this song.
4. "In sleep he sang to me, in dreams he came."

Answer: The Phantom of the Opera

This is from the title song, where Erik (the Phantom) has lured Christine through the mirror into a boat and takes her to his lair. The two sing about the Phantom's power over Christine through his angelic voice.
5. "Do I dream?" "I'm awake."

Answer: Les Miserables

This is from "A Heart Full of Love." In this song, a lovestruck Marius approaches Cosette, the girl he has loved from afar, and it's love at first sight for both of them. Meanwhile, Eponine, a street girl who is in love with Marius, watches and makes rather cynical comments such as, "He was never mine to lose - why regret what could not be?"
6. "I had a dream, a dream about you, baby! It's gonna come true, baby!"

Answer: Gypsy

From the classic showstopper "Everything's Coming Up Roses." A domineering stage mother, Mama Rose, determines to make her younger daughter into the performer the older daughter could not be.
7. "I have dreamed thee too long."

Answer: Man of La Mancha

Another song about dreams from this show. This song finds Don Quixote approaching a bar maid (who is also a prostitute) and believing her to be his noble lady Dulcinea. He sings this tender love song to her.
8. "I dreamed last night I was on the boat to heaven."

Answer: Guys and Dolls

This is from "Sit Down, You're Rocking the Boat," a song sung by a gambler testifying at a prayer meeting about how he "saw the light."
9. "At the beginning of my dream we were having a celebration of some kind..."

Answer: Fiddler on the Roof

From "Tevye's Dream," where Teyve makes up a dream that says his daughter has to marry the tailor.
10. "Sleep well, and when you dream, dream of me."

Answer: West Side Story

From "Tonight," where a young teenage couple, Tony and Maria, profess their love for each other.
11. "You can't just sit there dreaming pretty dreams."

Answer: Into the Woods

From "Into the Woods." Jack's mother sings this to Jack and then urges him to go into the woods to sell his cow.
12. "Dreaming of you won't help me to do all that you dreamed I could."

Answer: The Phantom of the Opera

From "Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again," where Christine mourns her dead father.
13. "Dreams were all I ever knew." "Dreams you won't need when I'm through."

Answer: Miss Saigon

From "Last Night of the World." A recently married couple (one is a Vietnamese prostitute, the other an American soldier) encounters some unexpected difficulty when the girl's betrothed shows up and swears to kill them. This song has them vowing that they will love each other always and build a new life for themselves.
14. "Are you the sweet invention of a lover's dream?"

Answer: Cinderella

From "Do I Love You Because You're Beautiful?" Cinderella and her Prince have been talking for quite a while, and here they both ponder how the one they love can be so perfect.
15. "Every man has his daydreams."

Answer: Pippin

From "Corner of the Sky," a song about finding your place in the world.
