Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. An easy one to begin with: What is the name of Frodo and Bilbo Baggins' Hobbit Hole?

Answer: Bag End

This is pretty basic; if you had problems here you might not want to continue down the page.
2. Which of the following is not one of the Istari?

Answer: Celebrimbor

Olorin is one of Gandalf's many names, Curunir is another name for Saruman, and Alatar was one of the little-known Blue Wizards- the other was Pallando.
3. When Aragorn takes the crown of Gondor in "Return of the King", he says something in Elvish. Who is he quoting?

Answer: Elendil

"Et Earello Endorenna utulien. Sinome maruvan ar Hildinyar tenn'Amber-metta" which means "Out of the Great Sea to Middle-Earth I am come. In this place will I abide, and my heirs, unto the ending of the world."
4. Peregrin Took died childless, ending the Took line.

Answer: False

Peregrin had a son, Faramir, who wed one of Sam's daughters, Goldilocks.
5. Tom Bombadil had many names. Among the Dwarves he was called what?

Answer: Forn

This piece of information was passed by quickly during the Council of Elrond. Tharkun is something the dwarves call Gandalf (It means Elf of the Wand) and Thrain was Thorin Oakenshield's father.
6. "...In the High Tongue it will not sound so ill, and _______ shall I be and all the heirs of my body..."

Answer: Telcontar

Telcontar is simply High Elvish for "Strider" and Aragorn revealed that such will be the name of his house when Imrahil of Dol Amroth expressed amazement at the way Pippin spoke to him.
7. What does Ainur mean?

Answer: Holy Ones

"In the beginning there was Eru the One who in Arda is called Illuvatar and he made first the Ainur, the Holy Ones who were the offspring of his thought."
8. Which of these elves would become known as Thingol?

Answer: Elwe

Elwe, one of the leaders of the Teleri, became enamoured of Melian the Maia and chose to forsake the journey to the land of the Valar. Because he saw the light of the Trees, though, he alone of his people is considered among the Caliquendi (light elves).
9. This Vala's name means "He who Arises in Might".

Answer: Melkor

In the beginning Melkor was "co-eval" with Manwe and was his brother in the thought of Eru and in the gifts of all the Ainur he had a part.
10. Which of the following elves was a Lord of Gondolin, and shared a name with a councilor at Imladris?

Answer: Glorfindel

Glorfindel was one of the Captains of the Army of the Hidden City and fell in battle with a Balrog when Gondolin was sacked. Glorfindel (2) was the elf who saved Frodo by drawing off the Nine and lending him his horse. There is some controversy as to whether they were the same person, (the original Glorfindel having been 'sent back'), but so far as published books written by JRR Tolkien go, they are different people, with the same name.
