Mr Entwhistle told Helen that Richard Abernethie was very fond of her. Helen's husband, Leo, had been Richard's favourite brother. Richard greatly appreciated Helen's visits to him after Leo died.

Cora was described as "given to blurting out remarks that had always better have remained unsaid". So after Richard's funeral, when Cora asked "But he was murdered, wasn't he?", and stated that it had "been hushed up very nicely", her family were a bit shocked at the social gaffe but did not take it seriously.

There was no evidence whatsoever that Richard's death was not natural...until Cora was murdered the following day.

The American title of this novel is "Funerals are Fatal". It is derived from a remark by Mr Entwhistle's sister. She was not happy about her brother attending Richard Abernethie's funeral, telling him that "Funerals are absolutely fatal for a man of your age! You'll be taken off as suddenly as your precious Mr Abernethie was if you don't take more care of yourself."

Hercule Poirot posed as Monsieur Pontarlier, a representative of the fictional organisation UNARCO (United Nations Aid for Refugee Centres Organisation) in order to infiltrate the household and discreetly observe the family. He was exposed by Rosamund, who knew he was a detective because Poirot had been pointed out to her in a restaurant in the past.

When Poirot asked why she had delayed mentioning it to the family, she replied "I thought it would be more fun not to."
