Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How old is Briony at the start of the book?

Answer: 13

Briony Tallis lives with her sister Cecilia, her mother Emily and her father, Jack.
2. Which of the twins was missing a triangle of flesh from his left ear lobe?

Answer: Pierrot

The twins are identical except from the piece of flesh missing from Pierrot's ear lobe on account of the dog he had tormented when he was three.
3. How many dresses does Cecilia try on before deciding what she is going to wear to dinner? (not including the one she eventually wears)

Answer: She tries on two dresses

She starts in a black crepe de Chine dress then changes into a moire silk dress before settling on the dark green bias-cut backless evening gown.
4. What is missing from Robbie's letter to Cecilia when Briony hands it to her?

Answer: An envelope

It is because Briony foolishly opens and reads the letter before giving it to Cecilia. It contains an explicit word starting with 'c'.
5. Does Briony's play, 'The Trials of Arabella' ever get performed?

Answer: Yes

It doesn't get performed when intended at the start of the book but at the end, young relatives of Briony's perform it for her 77th birthday.
6. Who finds the twins?

Answer: Robbie

Robbie walks up the driveway with one twin on his shoulders and another holding his hand, right before he is convicted of sexually assaulting Lola.
7. Why does Briony almost stop Lola from marrying Paul Marshall?

Answer: He is the one that raped Lola when she was 15

Briony witnessed the raping and told the police it was Robbie Turner because she thought she saw him 'attacking' Cecilia in the library earlier that day. Paul Marshall was actually responsible and later in her life Briony admitted to lying to the police.
8. When Briony was 10 years old, who did she say 'I love you' to?

Answer: Robbie

Ironically, Briony had a huge crush on Robbie. Later she accused him of a crime he didn't commit.
9. What did Briony go on to become?

Answer: A nurse

Much to the surprise of her family, Briony became a nurse, training at the same hospital Cecilia trained at.
10. According to Briony's revelation at the end of the book, do Robbie and Cecilia ever get to live together?

Answer: No

While the story seems to give Robbie and Cecilia the happy ending they deserve, Briony reveals at the end that this was not the couple's true fate; sadly, both Robbie and Cecilia died in the war. Writing a book in which Robbie and Cecilia *did* get their happy ending, and an opportunity to rebuke her for her lie, was Briony's atonement (and hence the novel's title).
