The Joad family are at the centre of the book "The Grapes Of Wrath". Set in the great depression, it won the National Book Award and a Pulitzer prize for fiction. Steinbeck was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1962 and this book was widely believed to be the reason for it.

Answer: George Orwell

Winston Smith appears in the novel "1984" by George Orwell published in 1949. It was the ninth and last Orwell book published in his lifetime. This, and the eighth book, "Animal Farm", are the most well known books by him.
