Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "1984" by George Orwell

Answer: The Last Man in Europe

The publishers did not feel that "The Last Man in Europe" was commercial enough as a title, so a more cryptic and interesting title was chosen.
2. "To Kill a Mockingbird" by Harper Lee

Answer: Atticus

Atticus is certainly the hero of the novel but Scout, Jem, and Dill are the central characters. The title reflects both the use and the uselessness of violence.
3. "The Great Gatsby" by F. Scott Fitzgerald

Answer: Trimalchio in West Egg

Several titles were considered including "Among Ash-Heaps and Millionaires" "On the Road to West Egg", "Under the Red, White, and Blue", "Gold-Hatted Gatsby", and "The High-Bouncing Lover" until Fitzgerald settled for a less ambitious title.
4. "Portnoy's Complaint" by Philip Roth

Answer: A Jewish Boy Begins His Analysis

Other titles that were considered dealt with slang words for masturbation. Instead, a personal problem title was selected as being less likely to offend potential buyers.
5. "Atlas Shrugged" by Ayn Rand

Answer: The Strike

The title of Ayn Rand's philosophical novel was changed as the original title gave away too much of the plot.
6. "The Heart is a Lonely Hunter" by Carson McCullers

Answer: The Mute

The characters in the book express their frustrations and loneliness to the mute character who makes no value judgements. The final title changes the focus to the protagonists.
7. "War and Peace" by Leo Tolstoy

Answer: All's Well That Ends Well

Tolstoy wanted the novel to have an element of optimism. However, the title was already used for a Shakespearian play. The word 'peace' was used to convey it.
8. "Catch-22" by Joseph Heller

Answer: Catch-11

At the time the film "Ocean's 11" was in production and a random number was chosen. It has since become a catch phrase for red tape.
9. "Lolita" by Vladimir Nabokov

Answer: Kingdom by the Sea

The unused title was a quotation from Edgar Allan Poe's "Annabelle Lee". Lolita has since become a slang term for a female teen who is sexually active with an adult.
10. "Mein Kampf" by Adolf Hitler

Answer: Four and a Half Years of Struggle Against Lies, Stupidity and Cowardice

If you have ever thought about the mental health and paranoid behavior of Adolf Hitler, his proposed title should give you a clue.
