Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. We open the book and Miles is having bad visions and wandering about in the dark - all too literally. But where is he?

Answer: An abandoned cryofacility on Kibou-daini

Miles is suffering from a typically bad drug reaction but we don't know why at the moment.
2. Why does Miles reckon the Tau Cetan beaded lizard is another hallucination?

Answer: The colours were right and it wasn't too big but nor was it hopping like a toad

Whatever has happened to Miles has left him suffering a really bad reaction.
3. Who has Miles lost contact with?

Answer: Armsman Roic

Armsman Roic is Miles's combined bodyguard and aide.

We have met all the other characters before in other books but none of them are in this one.
4. As the novel continues, we learn where Miles and his companion had been when things start sliding out of control. Where was this?

Answer: The Northbridge Invitational Conference on Cryogenics (Kibou-daini)

Apparently the Kibou-daini cryocorps are looking to expand their operations into the Imperium.
5. After Miles had come down from his drug reaction, he finds himself in a rooftop zoo. Who is the zoo keeper?

Answer: Young Jin

Jin finds it virtually impossible to pass a lost or injured animal or lost Vor lordling without trying to collect it.
6. Lord Vorkosigan might be relatively secure in the rooftop zoo but he has no ID or money, so where does he ask his protector to go for succor?

Answer: The Barrayaran Consulate

Jin has to travel far off through his planet's capital on this mission to a frightening location.
7. Miles's protector had received some funds from Miles's contact but the funds don't make it back to Miles. What went wrong?

Answer: Young Jin got arrested by the transit police on his way back

Jin had run away from home and his efforts to keep Miles's secrets only made the transport police assume he was a drugs courier.
8. Miles's colleagues managed to break out of detention and find another delegate from the doomed meeting. Who was this colleague in durance-vile?

Answer: Dr Raven Durona

Dr Durona first met Miles in another cryogenics-related case.
9. Miles has to find his own way back to the Barrayaran consulate. How did he manage?

Answer: He ended up walking

With no money and uncertain as to what had happened to Jin, Miles had little choice other than to walk the many kilometres from his safe-house to the consulate.
10. Captured by the enemy and returned to his proper habitat, Miles's initial protector plots escape from where?

Answer: His aunt and uncle's home in the suburbs

Jin ran away from his relatives' place because his aunt was going to get rid of his animals. This time, his sister decided she was old enough to go with him.
11. Why were Miles's protector and his sister at this location originally?

Answer: Because their mother had been cryofrozen and their father was dead

Jin and Mina's mother had been a political activist and her cryofreezing was politically motivated.
12. As is the way with Miles, things begin to get more complicated the more he looks into them. As well as the problem he had been sent to examine, what scandal does he uncover?

Answer: A bad batch of cryopreservation fluid was about to stop working

A bad batch of cryo fluid from a couple of generations ago was beginning to break down and the frozen would be real corpses.
13. What is so unusual about Kibou-daini's capital?

Answer: It's built over a massive system of cryo chambers

The city is built over a whole series of cryo chambers containing the nearly dead of many previous generations.
14. In today's world, universal healthcare is a major issue. Is this the case on Kibou-daini?

Answer: No

On Kibou-daini, it is access to universal cryogenics services that exercises the population. It's on your health insurance if you are lucky enough...
15. What payment did Miles make for his use of the cryo revival facilities in his former hideout?

Answer: Two cryo revivals of the operator's choice

Miles had to offer Dr Durona's services for the two revivals in payment for using the revival facilities on Jin's mother.

Answer: A sphinx

The genetically created sphinx was one of a series that had been created by the crycorp New Egypt.
17. Why was Miles so pleased to be offered a bribe by the corporate executive?

Answer: It indicated that someone was interested in his investigation

Miles is a great believer in letting people provide the rope that will hang them.
18. When reunited with his initial rescuer, was this person happy with Miles in full Auditorial Mode?

Answer: No

Lord Auditor Vorkosigan was enough to over-face hardened adults. The pre-teen youngster found himself pining for the grubby druggie.
19. Miles's brother, Mark, and Kareen Koudelka turn up near the end of the book. What brought them to Kibou-daini?

Answer: They thought it was a potential site for some anti-aging trials Mark was backing

Dr Durona was working for both Miles and Mark and the younger brother was looking for a suitable site for the trials that the Durona Group needed to run.
20. What news so upset Miles on his way back to Barrayar?

Answer: The news his father had died

Miles learnt of the death of his father when the Imperial agent on Escobar greeted him as Count Vorkosigan, thereby indicating he had inherited the title. This was definitely sad as Miles and Mark had been discussing the use of the Durona drugs on the late Count.
