Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. When was "Lord of the Flies" first published?

Answer: 1954

Golding published "The Lord of the Flies" in 1954. The first movie made after the novel was in 1963 and the second in 1990. Golding got a Nobel Prize in Literature for his work in 1983.
2. What possible explanation is suggested in the novel for Piggy's fatness?

Answer: He used to eat too many candies

In the beginning of the novel Piggy tells Ralph that his aunt has a candy shop. This could serve as an explanation to Piggy's fatness. While the other options are possible contributing factors, as is his asthma and the difficulties that may have created in terms of exercise, there is no information in the book to support them.
3. Why did Jack became the leader of the hunters?

Answer: Because Ralph felt sorry for him

Jack wanted to have his own 'army' and he was the first to suggest hunting. However, Ralph chose Jack to be the leader of the hunters because he knew how much Jack wanted to be the leader of all the boys - but the boys chose Ralph. Therefore, he wanted to give something to Jack so he won't be so upset about the situation.
4. Jack was an organized person.

Answer: True

Although Jack is a savage boy, when he becomes leader his tribe is very organized. There are guards who defend Castle Rock all the time and those who do not obey him are punished. Also, when the tribe goes to hunt Ralph, they follow him in a very systematic way and use smoke as signals.
5. In the beginning why do the littl'uns like so much to play with smaller insects and bugs?

Answer: To exert their power over something

When a littl'un plays with some insects he feels the power that he can exert over smaller creatures. Also, at the same time Roger throws small rocks around the littl'uns. All these show that the bigger ones always like to feel that they can control the smaller ones.
6. Who is not involved in killing Simon?

Answer: All of these were involved

Ralph, Piggy and Samneric joined Jack's feast that night and got involved in their dance. When Simon appeared from the forest the boys misinterpreted him for the beast and killed him in cold blood.
7. When Ralph dreams about returning home what is the 'safest place' that he thinks about?

Answer: A bus stop with lamps

Ralph dreams and asks himself 'What can be safer than a bus stop full with buses?' and then in his dream he starts dancing around a lamp. His dreams show that he longs after civilization, but the fact that he starts dancing around the lamp suggests that he becomes savage - even against his will.
8. After the boys kill Simon, what is that 'awakens them' to their senses?

Answer: The rain

In this scene the fire makes them more savage as they dance around it, while water - the droplets of rain - awakens them to reality, and the boys start to observe that 'the beast' is surprisingly small.
9. How many times does Ralph cry in the novel?

Answer: Once

Ralph cries only at the end of the novel, when the boys are finally saved. He cries for the darkness of the human heart, the loss of innocence and the death of his wise friend, Piggy.
10. And finally, who is the most savage boy on the island?

Answer: Roger

Roger is the only boy on the island who deliberately killed someone - Piggy. Also, towards the end of the novel he sharpens a stick at both of the ends - planning to kill Ralph in a very barbaric way. However, when Ralph sees the stick he cannot think of a reason why it is sharpened at both ends.
